You can go home again - if you're a frame

I decided recently to do a little rationalization of my small collection, and realized one bike I doubt I'd restore or ride, and I need the space. This was the 1974 Proteus, built here in MD, that I had made new (frame set only) when I was 17.

So I pulled off all of the components, wiped it down with a wet rag, and took it to them and donated it. The shop has changed ownership, but they still have two (?) Proteus bikes on display but newer. Anyway, I edited my signature file to show the change.

Well, I might go by there tonight and find it in their dumpster. Their choice.

I was going by there anyway, taking advantage of some iffy weather to get 4 of my wheels trued and 2 of my wife's; I'm a fair but not good wheel truer. Difficult to get a lot of wheels plus a frame all in the passenger seat of the Boxster (2 nice trunks but neither big enough for bike wheels).

It would be a bummer to find that in the dumpster, and a shame to have it dumped in a landfill.

Probably could have found a taker here in the forums. Especially since the price was right

Boxster- top down, fill up as best as possible, drive fast with heat on full to manage the cold, snow, weather.
I see no problem.

Sounds like my kind of bike, a double rejection.

Was there a problem with the frame, bad paint?

Not sure I could ever describe it as a great bike. What I wanted, and got, was a tall seat tube for me but a short top tube (most of my height is i my legs), and then coupled to a tight main triangle I wanted a long rear triangle to accommodate panniers. The result was an odd duck and the top tube actually sloped down towards the the head tube. The frame builder, one of the shop's three original owners, told me he swore he'd never try to make another like it. It rode OK, but is probably more of value to the shop as a historical artifact than as a completed bike. This is what happens when a 17 year old designs a bike.
