An untouched 1984 Peugeot P18T

Hi bike folks,
Purely for your enjoyment (and possible reference if you are restoring one of these), here are some photos of our 1984 Peugeot P18T, bought new by my wife and untouched other than tires, polish, and a tune-up. The serial number sticker reads P18T 53 3296788. The rear derailleur is marked Sachs Huret with a date stamp of 5083. The rims are Rigida 27 x 1 1/4 and it has a 6 gear cassette. I am no expert, but I find it very pleasant and easy to ride, and the Mixte frame very light and strong. Correct me if I am wrong here, but I keep seeing these on eBay advertised as "ladies bikes" which I believe to be incorrect. I thought the Mixte frame was an attempt to lower weight and also lower the center of gravity for better handling. Do I have that wrong? Cheers!

Lovely!

“Mixte” frames are unisex frames. That is what mixte means in French. And indeed, you’ll see plenty of men (and women) riding them in Europe. It’s really only Americans who seem to think that step-through frames must be women’s bikes.

Yeah, it can be described as a ladies bike, because that the way we 'muricans think of any step-through, but the proper term is mixte. And it's not like a NC public restroom; no gender enforcement based on type of reproductive organs in place.

The idea that a mixte is lighter than a conventional diamond frame may be mistaken, and you probably have a 6-speed freewheel (not cassette - it's a different animal) on that bike.

But I gotta say, what a lovely, well preserved example. Shiny!

My education continues! Now I know what Mixte means and, courtesy of Sheldon Brown, I sort of understand the difference between a freewheel and a cassette! Sheldon suggests people like me should just call them “clusters.” And yes, the motivation for the Mixte architecture appears to be utility rather than weight. I just read they are making a comeback as urban bikes!

Extremely nice example. I just purchased this same bike, but it is pretty filthy. A lot of grease and gunk on the chain, derailleurs, and freewheel. Plan to clean it up, but it will never will again look like your example.
