My latest errand bike project

I originally bought my old Peugeots with the idea of using them as shopping and errand bikes. That worked well, until I realized how nice they were to ride and spent rather too much money fixing them up! So I needed another errand bike, and I came up with an old Astra that was in appropriately ratty shape. I have the usual triple crank in front, but it is a TA clone this time. I used the Mafac brakes and levers, some old cheap racks, and a Suntour GT rear derailleur. I put most of it together today at the local co-op, and now need to add the chain and derailleur cables. Then figure out where I want those Mafac levers to sit on the bars. They look awkward where they are now.

Looks like a fun project! I'm a fan of almost anything with racks and fenders. The color is cool too. Don't see a ton of green bikes for some reason. The brake levers may be a little high, but it doesn't look too bad. If that's where they're comfortable for you there's nothing wrong with that!

Way to go!

These ratty, but very functional oldies are an exceptionally good choice for townies, commuters, beaters, etc. Less chance of getting stolen.

My personal choice is an old, rigid MTB based ones built as a 1X. They take up a little less space and tend to be easier to step over.

Almost done! I have to put on a bottle cage and hang a bag from the bar extender. Make sure all the bolts are tight etc. I took it for a short spin as is and it is a nice ride, slow but nice.

Thanks! I totally agree. Although in Seattle I need more gears! I have a triple on several of my old cheap bikes, with a 26/38/42 combination. They may not be fast but it’s easy to get up the hills.

Nice job! love the blue bar tape, and gears in Seattle - I hear that. In West Seattle I seemingly can't go more than a mile without encountering a hill of some kind.

As you can see from my picture, it’s uphill right from my door. It can be a challenge to find semi-easy routes.

It is an “Alero” cold forged crank. Probably no relationship to Oldsmobile though. The rings are new TA rings, which are easy to get in France.

I see one of the bolts is loose! Eep.

Thanks so much for posting, fine project!

Have always liked these base model MB frames from the late sixties and early seventies with their combination construction of lugged head paired with lugless seat and shell. The dull silver-grey undercoat is quite durable and does a fine job of rust inhibition.

Someone should send you the proper allen capscrew for the ESGE chainstay bridge so you don't have to employ that upper clamp piece.

Of the colour crimes of orange cable casing and blue hb wrap the hb wrap be the woyser.

The colour gendarmerie is on its way!

I just happened to have the blue bar tape, and the orange housing was sitting in my co-op’s box of reusable bits. It seemed like a good combination all ‘round!

I’ll take another look at the stand to see if I can simplify it. It is a center stand and has curved stay protectors under the top clamp, so it works well as it is. I have the same center stand on my gold Peugeot. It’s nice to have when dealing with heavy loads.

in the first photo when i looked at the bag stabiliser by the brake hanger i thought it a pipe coming oot the wall o' the building

only realised its vero purpose upon encountering second image...

all joshin' aside - a very nice job!

Barcons, racks, and half-step-plus-granny gearing -- what's not to like? I love my rusty, ratty old Peugeot UO-8 as an errand-runner. It definitely gets most of my transportation cycling miles, and some recreational use, as well.

Nope. I did not get the full bike. It was a frame, fork, headset, and a few other bits. The BB is a Velo Orange French set. I usually use Phils but not on this one. I had all the other parts for the bike on hand, except for the 27” wheels, which I snagged at the co-op.

As ratty as it appears you really classed that Astra up with barcons and a VO french BB not to mention a triple crank, the lady may be a tramp but she's classy. Nice project.
