1997 Mondonico EL-OS

Hey guys,

Just picked up this super clean 1997 Mondonico from the original owner. He upgraded components to 10 speed Campy Record and swapped out the steel fork for the carbon Reynolds one you see in the pic. Thankfully, he still had the original Columbus EL fork and 3TTT stem, which I will put back on the bike. He also threw on these Mavic Ksyrium wheels, which I'm not too crazy about (so stiff and not really liking the look).

Looking for recommendations for a wheelset that would look and feel nice on this bike (10 speed Campy). Thinking maybe some H Plus Son Archetypes in black with DT Swiss 240 hubs? I think I want the rims to be black. Not sure what would have been originally on there in 1997... Maybe I can find an old wheelset that would work.

I've heard these Mondonicos ride really well so looking forward to riding it with some proper wheels... Thanks in advance!

I kind of like the wheels. A black seatpost would be nice.

Wheels should be stiff...perhaps a more supple tire or tire pressure would change the ride more than new wheels.

You could also remove the decals.

I always kind of liked the Ksyrium wheels. I second Narhay's comment about tires. Try some panaracer gravel kings in 28c. That is a beauty frame, congrats!

Gorgeous bike! I think your idea with the DT 240's sounds good. I have a set of DT 240 on black Velocity Aeroheads (weigh about 1500g) that has been a real nice wheelset. These are Zondas on my same era Carrera. I was never a fan aesthetically of the G3 spoke pattern but the look has grown on me and the wheels perform very nicely

Thanks, guys. I think the seatpost should look ok once I put the steel fork and stem back on. Thinking I should just use black bar tape too. I wonder how gum walls would look on there? Maybe these in an extralight: https://www.compasscycle.com/shop/co...6-cayuse-pass/

I wonder if the decals will just come off. I'll check when I get home.

Spaghetti Legs, I feel the same way about the lacing on those Campy wheels. Used to bother me but not so much anymore...

I'll have to take some more detailed shots of the frame too. The black has this really nice gold flake that glitters in the sun...

Very nice @Caliwild and you can colour me jealous. I had my hands on a nice blue Mondo frame earlier this year and had much the same Chorus 10sp build plan as you have. I then discovered the frame had been in a frontend impact collision which damaged the top and bottom tubes so the frame is scrap. Still have the Chorus group. One day....

Cheers.

Oh, that stinks! Luckily, this frame looks pretty darn good. At first I thought the chrome chainstay had issues, but it was just the clearcoat flaking off. I peeled it all off and now it looks like brand new chrome. Debating whether I should spray some clearcoat on there...

I have an early/mid 80s Mondo that I crashed and crimped the toptube and downtube. I have had it repaired by an excellent local framebuilderfrsmebuilder, so I do not agree that your crashed bike is junk.

If it is really junk, share the fork with me.

Cool bike!

How can you tell the wheelset is "stiff"? I'm confused as to what you mean.

I also have an ELOS Mondonico from 2005. It came to me with the sexy curvy silver Record road hubset laced 3x to 32 mm Mavic Open Pros. The rest of the group is Record or Chorus, and the fork is Reynolds carbon with aero blades. This is the best bike I've ever owned. Second is the ear.y/mid '80s Mondonico that has had its toptube and downtube replaced. I have both of them built with Campagnolo 2x10 indexed shifting systems.

The older one has tubular wheels custom built on 2006 Campagnolo Record 10 speed hubs, laced 32 hole 3x to Mavic GP-4 tubular training rims (about 415 grams each) and Sapim CX-ray spokes. That wheelset is 1500 grams with QRs. I don't know if they are stiff, but they spin up fast and carry me over anything I can't steer around. The older frame has just enough clearance to handle 28 mm Challenge Parigi-Roubaix tubulars, and the 2005 can accept 28 mm x700c Continental road tires.

GREAT framebuilder!

I guess the better word is harsh... although it could be the tires that are on there (Gatorskins which are pretty bad-riding tires). Maybe I'll try better tires and see how that goes before ditching the wheels... Maybe I'm just not liking the looks of the wheels either (fat bladed spokes)...

I had 700x23 gatorskins. The worst tires I have ever rode. Like riding on a garden hose.

I switched to continental gp4000 s ii tires in 25. Much, much better. I had a flat with the gatorskins but never with the 4000s.

If you want skinwall you can try vittoria corsa g+. Skinwalls with black bikes look nice. Both the g+ and 4000s run about 2mm wider than listed if clearance is a concern.

I have two criteria:

Flexy wheel - The wheel flexes when you’re out of the saddle and rubs against a tightly adjusted brake.

Feel and confidence when cornering at speed and accelerating hard, although this is more of a big picture factor as the frame/fork and tires fit into this equation too.

@Caliwild get some Veloflex Masters for that bike and it will rock.

Those are Mavic SSC wheels, they are very good quality wheels and still command a good price on the used market, I think you should keep them, perhaps as backup wheels.

What's your opinion on just keeping this set and changing out to comfy tires? Thanks.

Yeah, I'm thinking I'll just throw on some new tires... The wheels cleaned up really well and are growing on me...

Keep the wheels, change tires to vittoria corsas for skinwall or gp4000s for a supple ride.
Change the tires then decide about the fork...its pretty nice and its threadless.
You have what many aspire to as an after.
Regardless, nice bike...ride it well.

Going back to a steel fork may mitigate issues with that wheelset.

A set of Eurus would look nice, but I have run those wheels on a DeRosa and a Merckx with no issue at all.

I agree on the skins, a hit or miss tire of sorts...

Yes, I’d definitely swap back to original fork and stem. Silver seatpost will then play nice with everything. I’d also go black bar tape and let the bike stand out. There’s very few bikes I think look better with something other than black bar tape.

I’d go with a higher end tire. In my opinion, it’s one of the biggest things you can do to change ride quality. Vittoria Corsa G+ or Veloflex Master will make a big difference. Tan walls would look good on that bike but not sure how well on that wheelset...

It’s a nice riding wheelset, I used to have them, but if you’re going back to a more traditional look with everything else not sure I’d keep it. They still command sound money, could use that to fund something else. Silver 10sp Record hubs laced to really anything would look great on that.

Thank you... I was thinking the same thing. If I go back to the original stem and fork, I have to change the wheel set, since it'll look odd. What do you think of the idea of lacing up some H Plus Son TB14s or Archetypes to Chris King Silver hubs? That would still keep it vintage looking but with newer parts...

Update... found a clean set of Campy Daytona hubs laced to Mavic Open Pro rims (dark anodized). Going to throw those on there. Will send updated pics when done. Probably going to go with Vittoria Corsa G+ skin wall tires. Thanks again...

Update

Here is the new and improved version... Had the bike shop lace up some H Plus Son Archetype rims to Campy Record (new) hubs. Got some new gunwale Vittoria Corsa G+ tires. Put the old fork back on too... It weighs 19.3 lbs as photographed...
