Looks a bit more like I can make this trip, tho still not locked.

Went on my first real training ride today. I’m certainly not in biking shape, was in pretty good skiing shape a couple weeks ago. 23 miles with 1300 elevation around Spokane, and didn’t feel horrible, so I’m stoked about the ride.

Nice - my longest ride of the year was today at only 25 miles. Most of my training has been mountain biking with climbing

Nice - I'll be riding French as well.
Google group discussion is leaning toward a bbq potluck at Schmuck Park in Colfax on Friday night. Thinking around 6 - 6:30 pm to allow folks to make the trip.
Confirmed with my dad that he will be at the park in the morning to grab food from everyone for the halfway break. He'll also have a 5 gallon jug of water for bottles. I'll have two bottles with me - one in the pocket and one on the bike. We can take the lunch break at the top of Steptoe Butte - great views. Or, at the little park at the bottom - has some grass to sit on depending on how long we want to be there. The butte is the high point of the ride and just shy of half way. The ride after that will be downhill and flat for the majority of it. There are a couple of hills getting back into Colfax but they're not too bad

Lately I've had a couple of Windows of Opportunity to pursue Youthful Exuberance aggressively.
Such a window opened and I chose to do this ride early, for fear of the temperatures in a couple of weeks.
Here's the narrative. Pics to follow soon. I confess pics many not be in the proper order, but you will get a flavor. Also, no pics from the top of Steptoe Butte - that's for you to see for yourself. I rode the Harding/Holdsworth (46X30 chainrings) on a wheelset with 30mm Schwalbe One tubulars.
Get your map. I took most of the segments from the MapMyRide link listed in this thread.
Here's the route I followed starting in Colfax from a city park (north end, near the school) with lots of parking and a public restroom. I had stayed the night on Steptoe Butte so I omitted that 4 mile climb from my ride. Cedar Street out of town, quickly becomes gravel and stays flat out to the road at Glenwood. Left on Glenwood is a climb over the hills to catch pavedDry Creek Road. A 'problem' (encountered 5 times throughout the day) is that most of the roads appear to be recently 'improved' by grading and adding more gravel on the short climbs. So Glenwood was a walk-up for approx. 0.2mi. Right on Dry Creek (wide and paved with shoulder). Left on Imler (gravel with only 1 very short walk-up). Right on Hume Rd (paved), past the Butte turn-off - then left on Ragon Road (gravel) to CashUp. Ragon Rd had 3 short sections of walk-up. CashUp Flat Road is the best of all the gravel roads - the roadbed 100% firm with less loose gravel than any of the other sections. I took paved roads the rest of the way = Hwy 23 to Green Hollow Rd to Colfax. Green Hollow had some climbs and at the end of the ride we all HATE to have to use the granny - but such is life!
I started the ride well fed and fully hydrated. Carried 2 standard bottles, a can of V8 (for sodium), a light lunch + an orange. Without resupply, it was just enough on a day in the upper 60s. The gravel roads are in excellent shape - no sand, no wash outs, no ruts, no washboard. More gravel than I would have liked on every segment but CashUp Flat, but I didn't have any close calls. Glenwood (1), Imler (1), and Ragon (3) - each had thicker gravel on the steepest hills that had me taking (5) short walk-ups.
Gravel roads are easily wide enough for a car + cyclists. Every intersection had a sign with road names. I was MOST HAPPY to see that the steep uphills (I walked) were not followed by steep downhills = my nemesis on gravel. In hindsight, my 33s with knobs would have yielded a day when I wasn't so attentive in constantly searching out the "best line". I could also have spun up those short climbs with knobbies. Relative to gearing I was happy to have the 30 chainring matched with a 26 cog - but I'm old & feeble.
edit: not hardly any trees for shade. Dogs chased on 3 occasions but they started late and were not too aggressive. Two houses had more aggressive acting dogs that were fenced on property.
In the last pic you can see the grading is recent, the dark gray ‘shoulder’ is very soft, plenty of gravel for the climb.

Next day’s ride. No gravel.
And since it was suggested in the thread to try the Trail of th Coeur d’Alene = I did.
Smoooooth pavement. Only did 27 of the 74 miles, so due a redo.

The only real difference in the "official route" is that we'll head south through a side street in town and turn toward Palouse (unfortunately a climb out of town) and be on pavement for a good 10-12 miles before hitting the first section of gravel at Glenwood. All three of the gravel roads mentioned with new, thicker gravel get a decent amount of traffic (for the country) and will hopefully have some decent tracks worn into them in the next two weeks. If any wheat trucks start driving the roads it will break up the gravel a little quicker. I will be checking out some of these roads on Friday afternoon before the ride to what the condition is.
Temps are supposed to hit the mid-80's on Thurs/Fri this week and then be back into the 70's by next Sunday. I would hope that we'll see 70's to 80's and not 60's.
We'll also have one longer, steeper downhill on gravel (maybe a mile or a little less) that doesn't have a climb before it because we'll be dropping into a valley. It's off Green Hollow road and three years ago the gravel was ok but the washboard was a little dicey.
For Friday, I'm having my dad double check and make sure the bbq pits are still at the park in the picnic area. If so, I'll make sure to grab some charcoal and can bring some burgers/hot dogs and buns. Others can bring a variety of food to share and of course the beverage of your choice. I'll plan on being at the park about 6pm.

Checking weather this week shows low 80's until Thursday and then it rises to the high-80's. A 9 am start will definitely be good and we should be done with the big climb before it gets too hot. I may actually bring my Camelbak instead of a second water bottle. My brother (change from my dad) will have the sag wagon with water refill at Steptoe Butte (as well as lunch food we give him)
The advantage of the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes is there's a lot of water around if you get hot during Sunday's ride. Just ask Drillium Dude (@Drillium Dude)

I crashed today and as a result can barely walk. I came down very, very hard on my right hip/glute. Superficial bramble scratches on all appendages - one even caught me next to my eye. It took me 5 minutes to get back to the road 
But! I will make a day-trip of it in the car and will assist as a second sag-wagon. I'll have tools and can hold onto anything else anyone might think to need at the lunch stop.

I'm a dark horse on this one (and I ride a dark bike).
I might be able to make it; I'm trying to line up coverage at work. Seattle area cyclists heading over, feel free to PM me on the possibility of ride sharing from Seattle/Tacoma/Issaquah/NorthBend etc. Admittedly, I'm not much fun to roadtrip with, since my hearing disability makes for poor conversation on the highway; but y'know, "Gas, grassor ass." (OK, definitely not that last one.) 
Is there a general consensus on where to meet up on Friday evening for pre-functioning? At which motel/campground beer hall in which town are travelers going to congregate Friday night? Surely, there will be pre-functioning?

Is there a general consensus on where to meet up on Friday evening for pre-functioning? At which motel/campground beer hall in which town are travelers going to congregate Friday night? Surely, there will be pre-functioning?

Sadly, I won't be attending this year.
I've got a 5-month old and leaving him with my wife would mean mutiny on the bounty. Taking them with isn't a hot idea either as a 4+ hour car drive would be agony for everyone. He can go about an hour but after that, he begins melting down.
I'll begrudgingly live through the updates this year.

We're meeting at Schmuck Park on Friday evening for a BBQ. I've reserved the picnic area there from 6-8 pm. I'm bringing hamburger, hot dogs and buns. We've got plates/utensils, condiments covered. From there it's bring whatever else you can add to the mix including your own beverage of choice. I also spoke with the police department yesterday (the town is about 3000 people) as long as beer is in a cup and we're not "out of control" there won't be any issues. Hard to think of this group as being out of control.

Does the local Colfax grocery store have a decent deli section where we can purchase accompaniments for your generous dinner contributions?
Or should we plan to bring from home, along with lots of ice so they survive the drive?
And should we plan to supply our own mid-ride meal for your dad to take to the stop?

If not, Pullman is about 15 miles south with a couple of larger stores as options.If you want to have some food mid-ride (at Steptoe Butte) feel free to bring it. I'll have a cooler and we can put stuff in there. My brother will meet us at the butte. I'll probably just plan on some fig newtons and a sandwich for myself.

I think I'm up to about 90% on this, now. Anybody else not have lodgings figured out? I'd be happy to split a motel room with someone (Looks like the Siesta Motel still has two bed rooms for $85. Friday and Saturday.) Otherwise I may try tenting at the Steptoe Butte RV park.

I'm at the Cougarland Motel (Go Cougs!) in Pullman. I reserved a room with one bed but have sent a message asking if they have rooms with two beds.
