What happened with Jeff?

What did the temperature top out at? It was only 99' a little south of the Palouse at the place so nice they named it twice.

Jeff had a hard crash early last week and wasn't able to ride. He was gracious and was sag wagon and took photos.

Temps were high 80's but by the end of the day it was feeling a whole lot hotter. The headwind back into town was welcome when you got it. Temps the day before were mid-90's

50 miles on the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes for Matt, Doc and myself. Beautiful weather, ride and scenery. We even got some good paceline riding in at a good clip. Photos later as we're all on the way home

I'm in the middle of uploading all the photos I took with my own camera (prolly shot another 300 between the other two), but this one (headed by Doc, the dude that traveled the furthest to participate) pretty much embodies the spirit of the day:

...except of course for the HEAT, Heat, heat, dirt, dust, gravel, sweat, thirst, cramping muscles and various other aches/pains that come with 60+ miles on the backroads of the Palouse. Oh, and did I mention it was hot? I didn't? Boy, was it hot!

But nobody got left behind and nobody crashed and nobody died and everybody made it

Thanks to everyone that showed up, and especially those who came from so far away. Doc, that was quite some commitment on your part, but I am sure the experience was worth it. I'm glad I got to share it with you guys and hope you all enjoy the various pics of your efforts throughout what was surely a long day in the saddle.

That pic above does sum it up pretty well, Jeff. Except you don't get the feeling of how outrageously hot it was Many thanks for being our SAG driver, you were (quite possibly, literally) a life saver out there, with the water and sports beverages.
.
Friday night picnic pre-ride shot of everybody geeking on @gugies Grander Sportier. Everyone looks pretty serious in the pic, but actually, after burgers and beers and Marie's amazing homemade lumpia, we were all pretty jolly, despite the heat. Editorial comment: I'm kind of amazed with cooking like that, her hubby @RogerM doesn't weigh about 300 lbs.

He must put a few miles in on his bike.

L-R: RogerM, Tommy (stoker/photographer), Marie (back at the car), Dr Cannondale, Gugie, Northbend, our host Scozim, Dfrost and AndyK.

I was sharing a motel room in Pullman with Doc, and while driving down there after the Friday night gathering, he stopped to take a pic of the stunning sunset a few miles outside of town, so I of course took a pic of him taking a pic:

Okay, somebody that sweated out the following moments can tell the stories behind them. Keep in mind I juggled three cameras, so if there are few shots of the leading riders here, they are likely on the other two cameras. Plus all the really cool downhill close-ups will be on Scott's camera, so bug him until he posts 'em

Enjoy.

Ok folks - lots of photos forthcoming with more to process tomorrow. Thanks to the gracious Drillium Dude who took hundreds of photos through the day to memorialize this epic, painful and absolute blast of a weekend (despite those that wanted to kill me).

The group is all smiles before we ride a mile and a half and start our first climb out of the valley that, according to the sign at the top, is 10%.

I was feeling fresh at the beginning - ask me how the quads felt a few hours later

Roger and his awesome son, 10 yo Thomas, who was game for everything the course through at them

One of the best shots of the day as we hit our first gravel climb. Unfortunately, the county had fresh gravel on the road so picking you way through the thick stuff was challenging at times.

This is the new sport of synchronized shifting:

While we get ready for the pain of climbing Steptoe Butte (and think about Marie's fried rice that will be waiting for us at the bottom), Jeff has time to check out some local wildlife

Matt was kind enough to wait until we were out of camera range to blow past me

Doc is finding his rhythm and grinding it out:

and so is Gugie:

Matt in the lead again:

Steptoe Butte

Scott is actually in the photograph below - a tiny yellow dot. Can you find him?

This is a great sequence here as we come to the end of our last gravel stretch (and best gravel road for that matter)

Mark and I are toying with each other - in my mind it's "I should let him finish first. Nah, why would you do that, just keep your front wheel out in front....." It's hot and we're tired, but you can already see Doc has other visions of grandeur.

As he sneaks to the left in the thicker gravel

And, he successfully makes the pass and gets the stage win. We commented it was too bad we didn't have barriers to move him into

We're smiling because karma came back to get Doc about 15 minutes later when he had a flat on the rear tire while we were at our "gather back up, find ice in the cooler and shade to sit in spot"

"Loudest Jersey" award goes to Tim

View from top of Steptoe Butte

I really liked this one - one of the best that came out of my camera. Mark looks fresh as a daisy (though I doubt he feels that way at this point), is smiling and giving the thumbs-up. This was a nice surprise during tonight's editing session

The end of the last gravel section

L to R: Roger, Matt, Tim, Thomas, Mark, Doc, Scott, Andy and Dave. I can prolly be seen reflected upside-down in the lens of the camera Scott is holding

I could hear each bike long before I saw them. This steep section was one of the best for burst mode on the telephoto camera, so I only have this one representative pic:

And this one of Andy:

Cue the theme music from "Mad Max"

Sometimes making food is beautiful

Optimism:

One of the best views on the hardest (last) climb of the day:

That climb was a very different experience for everybody...

A lone figure approaches - on foot!

It's Tim - and you know what? He ended up jumping back on his bike and finishing the last climb in the saddle. Yay!

Mark cuts a lean and mean figure as he crests the final hurdle. I love that flash of sun reflecting off the rear fender:

Dave finishing in fine form as well:

Matt with Roger, Thomas and Andy as they make their way up on foot:

Roger suffered with cramps for a good deal of the ride but gutted it out to the finish. Glad you're feeling better, Roger!

That's it for my camera; I'll leave you with a parting shot of Tuscany - Eastern Washington-style

Wow! Thanks for letting me follow from my easy chair. I wish I could have been doing the flats and downhills with you. The uphills might have done me in but I could probably have held my own at dinner. Great pix!

More photos - as mentioned earlier, Jeff was busy
@andy k

Back on pavement for the rest of the ride - 11 miles with two really tough climbs at the end of the day. They're not quite as hard when you aren't tapped out because of the heat like we were
