Resource For Triples

-----

The forum has had quite a few discussion threads recently regarding the building of or converting to three plateau chainsets.

Occurred to me that there is a resource for folks working with five-pin, 50.4mm, designs that is not very well known.

In 1977 Verot did a major reworking of the Stronglight range of chainsets. This is the time when models 104 and 105 launched and model 99 was revised. It was as well the occasion when model 93 was discontinued.

About a year and half later they created a new adaptor chainwheel for use with the 49D, or any 50.4mm BCD set. It permits one to mount model 99 chainwheels to the 49D. Model 99's BCD is 86mm and it goes down to a small of 28T. Sakae Ringyo (SR) also offer chainwheels of this BCD.

The part is designated nr. 490T and is available in dentitions of 48, 50 & 52. As a complete chainset it is named the 49 Tri.

Below are two catalogue illustrations followed by a photo of a set fitted to a cycle.

Good to know, but I can't say I've ever seen a 490T ring for sale, while complete Stronglight 99 cranksets (and other 86bcd sets) are readily available on eBay, often for very reasonable sums.

I have in my stash a 50.4bcd outer ring that's drilled for 122bcd rings. That's never struck me as a particularly practical idea.

Except when you're looking for one.

One has to have the hoarder view, buy when you see.

the assembly views shown from the catalog, bring a smile, note the fixed cup on the outside of the big ring?
I know, made for a more compact illustration.

Yup, that's my general strategy, which means I have more crap in my basement than I could ever need.

Speaking of which, here's a set of arms for relatively small money, and then make yourself a nice compact double with this 49t ring and this 32t ring. Total cost is about $60 or so shipped.

Wow! Cool information, I never knew about that. I wonder how many of those 490d rings are sitting around in boxes, mistaken for standard 49d rings?

Is one of the additional drillings spaced at 122? The others appear not to be countersunk. It would be convenient to be able to use the same outer ring for either BCD.

I will admit that my first thought on seeing this was "Hey, some enterprising triplizer-monger ought to revive this one." Then I came to my senses.

How about Ofmega and Avocet, as in good exploded view also? :D
