1991 Waterford Paramount Build

Here is my build project, why, I don't really know. I have always longed for a 90's era Paramount. This one purchased from a fellow BF member @jjames1452.

Still searching for the right wheelset...anyone? I vision it with Mavic Open Pro or MA40's with C-Record hubs, 8 speed rear end. I have not measured the rear spread, guessing 126.

Here is a link to my google photos, shared link: https://photos.app.goo.gl/7lvbtZ3W0FN0VXgr2

Here is where I am at today.

First off, go Shimano 8/9/10 on the wheels. More selection, better prices, unless you find a deal on 8-sp Campy wheels.
Then, Wheels Mfg Campy spacers for 8sp. $60.

Rolf Vector Pro's, polished, with polished bladed spoikes.

White American Classics (they have red/black lettering.

Campy Vento HP 16's, already 8sp. Sure, the decals are pink. Sure, they can be purchased in red.

Hope Tech or White Industries hubs (8-sp Campy were available last time I checked), laced to Ambrosio Chrono.
(You may not find lighter.)

Are you going to spray on the hoods, or what?

Perhaps you can find a red Brooks Swallow. Then white wrap.
Otherwise, black wrap.

I'd sure try a Cambium on that thing.... however, the Brooks gives me hope I can keep up on the Dare.

You know I worship your build knowledge, but Campy is what I want, not sure why, just how it "feels". I also want 90's stuff, again, just a feel.

Keep in mind the lettering is not white, silver, so the group fits nice.

Bar tape already purchased....you guessed it Black leather Brooks, matching the saddle, all about comfort, to hell with the "weight thing". You know me better than that, I will ride the Dare on my 28lbs loaded 84!

I could be way off, but he/she as sits is a bit over 15, but really I am not counting. I will run with my Acorn "glove box". I figure in college I wrestled 150, so the 185 I have now, who really cares about a few more pounds.

Look forward to riding he/she with you, when are you coming back to Wis.

BTW, ordered new hoods, the units I had were aging, and 1 tore. I have a unknown method to get them on, with a little heat and wire lube. I am an AV guy.

Talk soon!

My 92 PDG 5 weighs in at 21 lbs., ready to ride, with a Brooks saddle, so your guestimate might be a little high, with that carbon fork.

Your 92 is similar to my 78 and 84 then, and you are correct, I must admit, I was a bit shocked. This one is much lighter!

I had a moment when I think I started wishing I had a scale, but then I realized again, he/she is lovely no matter how much the scale says.

Looking forward to this one!

The manner in how you tackled last years DD is very impressive, especially how that bike was heavy duty dressed for touring x-country.

If some of us team up for 200k or+... conservative pace or not, going to need all the climbing apparatus possible. Spinning, lighten up and a wheelset specific to the task.

Gave up a nice pair of Chrono's tubular just last Fall. Regrets and indeed are sneaky light though not much of depth for brake surface area. A heavier rider who might take advantage of gravity and then need brakes may be in for a surprise. That being an overcooked wheel and blow the valve stem. The other thing is to go for a higher spoke count plus these are not for high tension compared to today. Vintage cool though.

Honestly, I don't see myself on this for the DD. 53/39 front. Not sure yet what the rear cassette will be geared at yet (8sp) My 84 is my Dare bike. I built that bike after DD #1. I train on it, and ride with the bag full, 3- water bottles, and a heavy chain! I take the chain out for the Dare

I see this bike for long weekend rides around Madtown.

Already had the C-Record (92)...but that is a good idea.

A big +1 on @RobbieTunes’ recommendation for Shimano compatible wheels. Campy 8-speed wheels are lovely, but no better than higher end Shimano (600, Ultegra, Dura-Ace), judging by my experience with some 8-speed Record hubs versus many, many Shimano hubs. And 8-speed Campy-compatible splined cassettes are extremely limited in availability and gearing options, not to mention their high cost. Tooth wear on several Campy cassettes wasn’t great, either.

With the Wheels Mfg kit (taller lock ring is critical), you have the option of building whatever cassette you desire from Shimano, SRAM or Miche loose cogs. I love my custom cassettes!

Thank you for your input. Humm, will not rule out Dura-Ace, as it was a popular OEM for this era Paramounts.

1992 Paramount OS

I bought my 1992 Paramount OS frame in NOS 2008. It had been hanging on display at a local Schwinn dealer's for 16 years. This was one of the last frames built by Schwinn before they went under.

It's a true frankenbike with all black components except for the Shimano shift levers. This is one of my top 10 favorite riding bikes although the forks are a little stiff for my tastes.

I showed it to Richard Schwinn when he was in town for a local presentation a few years ago. He told my frame was designed as a criterium bike, and if I sent the fork back to Waterford they could make me a new one with lighter gage fork blades which would give it a smoother ride in the front.

I agree about going with Shimano cassettes. I'm running a 12-30T 8 speed on this bike with 48-38T chainrings.

I meant "Shimano 8/9/10" on the wheels only.

With a Wheels Mfg spacer kit, you can run any Shimano/SRAM 8/9/10 wheels and space your cogs with the Campy spacers to work with your Ergo 8-speed group. You just need:
Shimano/SRAM 8/9/10 wheelset
Shimano 8-speed cassette cogs
Wheels Mfg 8-sp Campy spacers for Shimano.

This opens up a ton of available, great wheels that you can then use. You can take advantage of lots of 8/9/10 tubulars for sale for great prices (because they're tubulars, the horror), and then run them with your Bad Ass Paramount With The Carbon Fork!

Another option, of course, is 8-sp Campy hubs, find the best you can get, and then lace in whatever rim you want.

Another option, of course, is 8-sp Shimano wheels with an 8-sp Shimano cassette. The spacing is pretty close.

@crank_addict: correctomundo on the Chrono's. Not sure I'd descent Thunder Ridge on those. The Dare, sure. Find below a 16.5 lb bike with the Hope Tech/Chrono wheelset. Campy 8, but not exactly set up for anything but flats.

You all really have me thinking MA-40's or Open Pro's with 8-Sp Dura Ace & Shimano cassette.

@RobbieTunes - Good info but for clarity, let me validate what I read.

Use Shimano 8sp wheel/cassette with Campy RD and Ergo's. Space sprockets using Wheel Mfg Campy 8sp spacers. need to get a deeper lock ring (@Dfrost) for increase in cassette stack.

Did a search for said "Wheels Mfg Campy spacers for 8sp" without success both on google and on the Wheels Mfg site. Am I missing something?

I am looking for them, too. I have not checked Classic Rendezvous yet. They're red, were $60, and I've had two sets. They are used on Shimano 8/9/10 freehubs to space Shimano/SRAM 8-sp cassettes to Campy. I got my last set from whatwolf here on BF.

However, at one time, I had two nearly identical bikes, both 8-sp. One was running Campy 8-sp Ergo and the other was running Shimano 8-sp (Ultegra STI). I interchanged the wheels with few problems, as the spacing was close enough and the 8-sp chain had enough leeway to work. I rode a metric with norskagent here, running 8-sp Ultegra STI and Vento 8-sp wheels. I don't remember any issues with the bike at all. I imagine I had some noise at one end of the cogs or other, but really don't remember. I just remember it was viable.

I also ran a set of Mavics with 8-sp Shimano on an Ergo setup with little problem, maybe a bit of noise.

Just sent an email to Wheels Mfg. I'd not be surprised if they discontinued them, but perhaps in Europe they're still around.
