Chainring guards (bashguard?)

I've come to really like the chainring guard on my Schwinn Sports Tourer with Spécialités T.A. Cyclotouriste Pro 5 Vis crankset and am wondering,

where I can find something similar for other bikes, I'd like something for 130 BCD and 54T (a Shimano 600), that uses the existing bolt holes.

The T.A. seems to have special holes for the guard and chainring separator.

Most of these I believe have holes in the CR that accommodate a bash guard. Suginos are like that.

There is a company that sells a bunch of styles:

An option would be to cut your own out of a chainring that was a couple sizes oversized, but for a 54T, that would mean a pretty large ring. Let's see, with the circumference being pi*D, to increase the diameter by about an inch, I think one would have to increase the diameter by 3.14 inches, or about 6 or 7 teeth, so your donor ring would have to be at least a 60T, if not larger.

RockRing was a popular brand in the '90s but I don't think they ever made one for the 130 BCD.

Slightly off topic, but I have always liked the look of TA cranks. :)

Isn't that a chainguard to keep your bellbottoms out of the chain? For 130 you mau need to make one out of an old 54T ring.

Those are not "bash guards" they are chain guards that acted as pants protectors. Schwinn started putting them on 5 and 10-speed "lightweights" in 1967 so that your pant cuffs wouldn't be caught between the chain and outer chainring even if you didn't use pants clips. The one year only '68 S/S Tourer had a triple front TA crankset that didn't use a chain guard, however when Schwinn re-introduced that bike in '71 as the Sports Tourer they had both of the crankset suppliers (TA and Nervar) include chain guards (i.e. pants protectors). They were eventually removed in '76 when the Sports Tourer was re-introduced as the Superior.

I think their function is more like a "pants guard" than a "bash guard" as these were mostly used on road bikes. Actually very practical on bikes used for daily commuting as you did not have to cinch up your pants leg eith your sock or a Velcro strap to ride your bike.....

I think TA considered them to be bash guards as they were paired up with cyclocross specific rings.
