C&V event Cross Chain 2018 edition / open to date + input

Its been awhile but would like to host another Cross Chain ride for sometime this autumn 2018.

Plenty of time for planning and so far would prefer the same theme and route as 2015. But open to suggestions, especially to increase participants.

No date(s) of yet until we have feedback on what would be an approx. fit to all of our schedules.

I'll attempt to find the old link on this forum as to best describe the event. In brief, its a single day riding whatever you want (ideally vintage or modern classic) on 30 +/- mile asphalt, gravel and off-road single track on the Wisconsin / Illinois border, northwest of Chicago in the Chain-O-Lakes region.

Old school road gearing and on narrow tubular will suffice for some, though suit yourself with strategy, gearing, tires, baggage for tools...hehe. The Poker ride theme is another element. No drop ride, we regroup at specific stops, draw a card and best hand at the end earns the trophy.

The goal is to make it just enough challenge for all ages, those whom may not even be up to fitness and hopefully no one burst. Its about the fun, to get a flavor of old school days cyclo cross, yet challenge yourself if you want to race on ahead. For those riders, this time I hope to have a pre-arranged dealer at each rest stop so you can pull a card and roll on.

Plenty of accommodations in the area plus camping (with showers) available at the State Park. Very reasonable rates, tent or campers plus a few cabins.

For those who would travel long distances, we could incorporate another worthwhile day of riding and any mileage length, all scenic country road, etc..

Here's a link of pics from 2015. I welcome your suggestions.

Looks appealing. Hoping this is something I'd be able to attend.

Sounds promising! I'm thinking that it might be a good route for my vintage-ish touring bike.....

Late September or early October should work fine for me. I'd probably stay at the MIL's house in Oswego.

Might talk a couple of others (BIL + wife) into joining us, but they likely won't be on vintage anything. We can snicker and point at them if that fits the spirit of the event.

I should have mentioned... I'm doing the 3rd annual Peoria Vintage & Steel ride on Sept 29th. This probably won't be a potential schedule conflict for anyone but me, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

The Cross Chain poker ride is different, gives a great flavor of riding years back, X-country / cycle-cross, gravel yet has plenty of asphalt to tick off some miles at a swifter pace. The mixed terrain really isn't challenging but enough where its perfectly normal to hike a short climb. Though all of it is rideable, even with narrow tires.

Thinking this would take place on a Saturday. Post ride eats could be any number of nearby casual establishments. Have two very good places in mind, one goes back to 1938, old days character high above a lake.

Or, we could have an evening cookout but more logistics and weather in the Fall is unpredictable. Yet open to all of this.

Anyways, I've had offline discussions with others and having a second day ride on Sunday. This ideally for those traveling a greater distance and stretch out the riding. The ride would be along the lakefront of scenic city of Chicago. Flat with pathways catered to cycling.

We're in (oops, I spoke for her.........if I speak for her and she doesn't hear it, am I still in trouble?). I vote for sometime in October rather than September.

For anyone who is considering this event I was the lucky winner in 2015 and I can assure you it was absolutely a blast. Good roads, good gravel trails, some woods, some flats, some hills, great company.

It's the pedaling back after all that beer that I'm worried about!

This might be fun on the 77 Super Le Tour! I think without fenders I can put some 32s on and still have some good clearance. And chrome bikes need a little mud on them every once in a while, keeps them from getting too conceited

I've got a conflict as well as steelbikeguy on September 29, I'm getting married up in West Bend WI

So any weekend after that will likely be just fine for me!

Have we settled on a date yet? I know of two of us that want it on our calendar. Maybe the rat-rod (1973 Frejus) will be done by then - it had better be sooner or I'm going to be in trouble.

Steve - Is the Peoria ride going to get it's own thread? We already have the date on the calendar. There's family in Pekin who we have told that we are going on your ride.

I've started a thread for the last two years... and have just made a note on the calendar to start one in August. That's two months lead time... hadn't really thought about whether more was needed. I just assumed I'd already figured out who might attend.
Glad to hear that you've made it part of your plans!
