Modern "Classic" shoes
 

After searching for a casual or touring shoe that has a sleek Classic style I found the William Lennon " Aturo" , Magliamo's "Strada" and a pair on Ebay handmade in Serbia at 115.00 U.S. plus shipping. Surprised that shipping the Aturo shoes would cost 43 Pounds, just a bit steep! All have real leather uppers with an appropriatly stiff sole for riding - in my case I use a MKS Sylvan Touring pedal with no toe clips so grip is important. It appears the Strada might just fit the bill with what appears to be free shipping from Belgium where they are based.


I am aware of other shoes such as REW Reynolds, Quoc Pham and Dromarti but are more than I want or will pay - budget and all that.

Anyone else have difficulty finding an appropriate shoe - especially when riding in knickers and wanting to look somewhat stylish?

Some members use soccer or turf shoes. I recall @northbend modifying a cleated cycling shoe with a glue on rubber gripper sole. Wiggle sells DHB mtb shoes that might work for you.

Giro Republic work for me.

I also have a pair of Puma Touring.

If you like the look of the Strada, have a look at these: Prooü. Also by Ribó. I especially like the look of that touring sole:

Hasus makes a number of vintagesque cycling shoes, more roadie than touring. I have a pair of their vtg03 model which I use regularly without cleats (put some m5 set screws in the holes in case I ever want to switch to cleats). Their vtg01 model has no drilling for cleats. Edit: I bought mine from eBay AU without knowing the manufacturer. That only became apparent when I received them. In communication since then, they told me they will sell direct. I'm unaware of any US retailer where you can walk in and try them.

Anyone have any luck finding classic looking shoes in a wide width?

I, too, have a pair of Giro Republic, light green, that I bought from Sierra Trading Post. They were considerably less dollars than I had seen them advertised for elswhere. They run a bit small.

Another (out of budget) option is Baer handmade bicycle shoes. (Website)
I believe they can both build fully handmade shoes or turn your favorite shoe into a bicycle shoe with a stiffer plate with SPD connector.
So just pick you favourite Oxford's and have them converted. ;)

I like these Louis Guarneau Nickels. They take a recessed SPD cleat, and work for toe clips too. Not bad for walking. These have been through two Eroicas using the dreaded toe clips, and a ton of "real" riding on SPDs. I only paid $39 as a Nashbar closeout, but they are available other places for a little more. They come with a spare set of black laces. They come in light tan and brown too. I've also tried the Vittoria 1976, and without cleats the soles are too slick for either walking or pedaling, at least to me.

Thanks for posting this. That's a new brand to me. I like the look of those touring soles too. I'm putting these on my acquire list... The soles are similar to the old Avocet shoes. I also appreciate the ventilation drillium. Fully enclosed British style touring shoes wouldn't work in most of California. Too hot.

Also nice to see that they still make and sell a real cleated racing type shoe. That is in fact what everyone used with the old racing bikes that we all love. Only tourists and casual riders used touring shoes.

Interesting, mine fit a bit large. I have the brown ones. Not particular sleek but they do have a vintage look about them and are good for touring and walking around.

I have a set of Giro Rumble VRs....not as classic as some of the other offerings. I do like them and they're styley but I'll be selling them.along with the Giro footbed kit.....I found with the MKS touring pedals I prefer the difference in shoes isn't that much especially in the rain.

I'd like to try on a pair of those Proou that take a cleat. If they fit my Sidi Mega Sized feet, I'd get a pair.

Just got a pair and they seem to be very well made. Very walkable, with a nice, wide heel. Haven't gotten out on them yet, due to a lingering groin pull injury

As a comparison, I had tried the Giro Republic shoes, but the toe box was too cramped for me; the Holdsworth's are nice and roomy. My feet are 9.5" and I got the size 44 shoes, which fit perfectly.
