I had one of those. I wish I knew where it was now. Scramble tense intended.

The pot metal tool would often do the job before snapping.

In contradiction to the long standing rule of 'the group" stopping to allow for repair or assist with a mechanical or flat, I have a few exceptions. I have decided that certain categories of modern equipment are so problem-prone or take so long to sort. For that reason, I will no longer wait for problems related to
*disc brakes
*computers of any sort including cell phones
*tubeless tires
*oversized/external bearing bottom brackets
*anything related to electronic shifting

Well said, anything "modern" that comes to impede progress should be binned post haste.

Add your town to the short list of places I'd retire to.

Off the top of my head most of the people I rode with in the 70's either built their own bikes or worked on them - the only shop in town was a Schwinn dealer (no way), or drive to Fresno and go to the shop that @Straightblock worked at.

We had heard of the League of American Wheelmen from the four of us that subscribed to Bicycling Magazine in the town I grew up in. I guess there's a lot of different ways to get into cycling, even if we couldn't decipher SOPWAMPOS into plain english.

I'm in Victoria, basically the smaller, Canadian version of where you are already. Portland has a bunch of good mechanics as well I hear. If you like Portland, you'd like Victoria. Bring $$.
