I think I can fix this.

Are you sure it's not just a scratch in the paint?

Cynikal 06-12-18 11:45 AM

Actually, if you can address the rust, those are in a good location for some S&S couplers.

I think you've got your work cut out ;--/

Tin snips.
A few beer cans.
Four hose clamps.
Craigslist.

I saw a video of someone who cut a bike in those places and used tape on the gaps. He left it out so thieves could take it. He leaned the bike against a tree at the top of the hill. He video'd the thieves riding it down the (grass-covered) hill and wiping out when the bike came apart.

Wrong tape. Duct tape is considered the fixall. Some baling wire would help reinforce the fix.

+1 on the S&S couplers.

RobbieTunes 06-12-18 01:19 PM

I think you better go for her sister, this time around.

I think so, but I'm not volunteering to help you find it. The prankster lies in the bushes and watches and laughs.

ryansu 06-12-18 02:15 PM

In the words of the late great John Candy "
" this is the kind of thing I see on CL with a note from the seller, who probably doesn't know a cone wrench from a pedal wrench, confidently saying it shouldn't cost much to fix.

the rear part might make an interesting shop stool..

sloar 06-12-18 02:16 PM

I like the video with the bike hooked to a cable at the top of a hill. People would steal the bike and take off down the hill until the cable tightened.

On the same theme, search for the vid 'hot seat bike thieves prank'. Raw footage PITA

noglider 06-12-18 02:43 PM

They caught quite a few pants on fire.

madpogue 06-12-18 03:05 PM

^^^^^^ I call BS. So you're a bike thief, you happen upon a parked bike, unlocked, and you DON'T happen to notice two bigeffin' cylinders duct-taped to the seat tube? You DON'T notice that as soon as you grab it, it's about five pounds heavier than it should be? You DON'T notice that the seat looks like it's carved out of Frankenstein's shoulder?

And if they were real thieves, it wouldn't really be "bait" unless the cops were also in on it, ready to take them away.

Emotionally appealing, but not wise under American tort law.

DIMcyclist 06-12-18 03:37 PM

True, but it's still sort of a mercy compared to some tales I've heard. Here in PDX, when the messengers caught a bike thief, they'd beat them senseless with their U-locks, then lock them around the neck to street signs, with the words 'Bike Thief' written on their foreheads in Sharpie marker.

Don't believe its b.s.. The propane torches were taped only as a temp'orary means vs holding by hand. Thief possibly would only glance at it but carry on with his heist, not fully 'grasping' what it is. The pranksters were having a day of it.

Also, do you really think the one heisting is going to call the police and file a complaint?

No foul hijinks.

That and some JB Weld. If you can't fix it with JB Weld, Duct Tape and Bailing wire... it can't be fixed.

Thanks! Some proper belly laughs to be had, in spite of the blatant sadism of the guys doing the pranking. I get it, stealing bikes isn't cool, but neither is being an a$$hole.
