Lovely 720 @The Golden Boy, how would you compare riding the Brooks Cambium to a Leather Brooks B.17?

The C17 Cambium is now my favorite saddle. I like the Cambiums more than I like the B17, granted, I have a sample of one B17 and two different Cambiums.

It was actually quite a while before I'd gotten/ridden a B17- I think my favorite saddle had been the Selle San Marco Touring saddle- but I didn't like that it didn't have bag loops. The Avocet Touring II was also a favorite. When I got the B17 I realized why people like them- it's much more supportive. The Cambium has that supportiveness across the back that the San Marco and Avocet don't have that the B17 has.

I would not hesitate to recommend the C17, especially to anyone that likes a B17.

The shifting is Suntour Command Shifters modified for SIS 10 speed, Dura Ace 7700 in the front, Dura Ace 7803 in the rear and an Ultegra 10s cassette.

Everytime I see a pic of a Cambium saddle, I get an itch to finally get one......
Tried to get a freebee by applying for Brooks' beta testing programs, but alas, nothing came of it....:(

I prefer the narrow version of the B-17 and tried a C-15 on my Miyata 1000 for a while. I really wanted to love that saddle because the shape was perfect but I found the tail end near the rivets to be just too stiff and hard compared to flex that leather has. I like to ride back on the saddle so maybe to someone who doesn't it would be a non issue. I just found it got to feeling hard after about 20 miles where as the B-17 N never does. I hadn't seen that color for the Cambium before - very nice compliment to your bar tape.

I've been riding B17 saddles for a long time and recently put a C17 on my commuting bike. I love it equally well, except that the C17 is weatherproof, so in that way, I love it even more.

The funny thing about that seatpost... This bike came with the super cool Sugino SP-KC with the built in "ruler" on it:

The XC Pro seatpost feels like it weighs almost HALF what the Sugino does. At least it feels like it :D. I never would have considered that kind of weight savings over a seatpost.

Additionally, it's MUCH more adjustable. Perhaps the bigger issue is that the "flutes" that comprise the "ruler" allow water to sit in the seat tube. I always glob grease at the top of the flute- but I'm sure water gets in there.

XC Pro cantis are simply the best cantilevers I have used. Have them on 2 bikes. The pads still work great. Nicely done, sir.

I go all around the thought process about cantis. I like the look of the 80s Shimano wide profile cantilevers. To me, the BR-MC70, M732, MT-60, and MT--62 cantilevers are the best looking brakes. That wide triangle just looks cool- and it looks like they should have the most leverage- it's a great big long lever pulling on the brake! From what I read, lower profile cantilevers are "better." The wider arms do catch/rub on bags in the back and I did have a bike that I always ended up kicking the canti arms, so I do know they get in the way. I think my next "grail" build is going to have XT M732 wide profile cantis in the front and XTR M900 low profile cantis in the back.

I don't remember when I started seeing the XC Pros- that gorgeous champagne glow to them is just so beautiful. And they work so WELL. The infinite adjustment takes a little getting used to for setting them up- but then it makes so much more sense than a fixed starting point. I've considered getting a set of the Suntour/Pedersen SE Self-Energizing XC Pro brakes for the rear- they're cool, but I don't think anywhere near as classy looking as the regular XC Pro brakes. I was going to swap out the pads for the finned Matthauser pads- but the stock pads are still pretty good.

It's interesting reading this- When I finally got around to re-re-rebuilding my 1985 Trek 620- this was exactly what I had planned- but the XTR brakes didn't have *quite* enough adjustment. Which shocked me. I probably could have filed them down and gotten just a touch more out of them, but dude... filing XTR stuff???
