New Project: '85 De Rosa Professional

I just picked up this '85 De Rosa Professional from forum member @bigbossman yesterday. (Thanks again!) Some may have seen this on the C&V Sales sub-forum. It came sans wheels and with a mix of mostly c-record parts. Here it is stripped and with a spread of parts. I'm probably going to cold set the frame and switch over a modern Campagnolo group I have on another bike, and then use these c-record parts on that other bike. It does have a small ding on the top tube and some paint nicks, but I can live with that.

This will be my first Italian road bike, a gap in my collection I've been looking to fill. I'll update this thread as I get the bike put together.

Well done, mate, I’m glad you pulled the trigger! Even if your expectations are high, I suspect you will not be disappointed. IMO, the hype on the De Rosa Professional is real. I tried mine (‘86) with a first gen C Record group but couldn’t get it to take a big enough cog to regularly ride the hills around here, so I upgraded it to 8 speed Record. I did not cold set mine, not sure if that would be more necessary with 10 or 11speed group. Enjoy!

BTW mine has a small top tube dent too and I don’t even notice it any more

Nice frameset.

I'd look for an alloy 10 speed Chorus group.

Harder to find, but you'll be super happy with the performance.

@gomango, a 9-speed alloy Chorus/Record group will have to do.

Given the law of diminishing returns, I doubt a 10-speed would buy you much, anyway.

I KNEW I've seen that bike before.
And anything more than a 21-tooth freewheel would be just wrong.

Hey I have a copy of that mag! I bought my De Rosa from original owner and he said that he saw that magazine and went out and bought one within a couple of weeks. He emailed me a few months later, having found this magazine and De Rosa brochure (the one PB bikes sells for $60) and gave them to me. Nice article on Ugo De Rosa in it.

Nice score! I had one just like it, except bigger, until it magically turned into a 1965ish Cinelli. it is a fun ride. You will enjoy it. It will keep begging you to go faster, and it can lull you into a bit of trouble of the entering-a-downhill-corner-too-hot variety, but the De Rosa reputation for excellent riding frames is well deserved.

Too bad you had to put up with bigbossman, though.

I finished putting together the De Rosa today, and took it out for a shake down ride and some pics. I still need to trim a couple cables. I'm not sure if I'll keep the red cables. I might switch to white or black housing eventually. That Campagnolo cable kit is pricey though, so it'll stay for now. (The parts, including the stem/bars/levers/cables were transferred from another bike with internal top tube cable routing, hence the housing liner only in between the brake cable braze-ons on the top tube.) Great first impressions. Looking forward to more time with this one.

Also a very good choice.

That’s the same combo that I use on my Hollands.

That shined up beautifully. If you only need one Italian, that could be it. I could have had a red De Rosa, but when the card from my wife said "Order your bike!", I got in the Richard Sachs queue. What might have been.

My 1988 Pro is my favorite ride. I did the 10 speed and am happy with it. The red is a joy to see every time!

Do something IMMEDIATELY about that rear brake cable situation. The top tube guides are designed only to align and hold the housing and in no way are designed to withstand braking force. You stand an excellent chance of both destroying the guides and losing your braking.
