Picked up a Pinarello
 

Small-framed bikes have been more available this year than in the past - or at least I've been paying closer attention. Either way, this will be on the way to me in a few days. Can't wait. These photos are the seller's photos.

For a Pinarello, that paint and logos are in amazing shape! I assume it's a repaint? No offense intended if not (and not that there's anything wrong if it is), just that I've never seen a Pinarello from that era with its decals all intact and the paint so shiny.

I used to sell Pinarellos in a shop I worked in and I really liked the black ones. This one is beautiful.

What is the rear derailleur? Is that a first gen gran sport or a nuovo gran sport? Looks like the former from the pic but that wouldn't be right.

I am glad this worked out for you, judging from the condition I doubt that this bike has seen even 100 miles. I am sure you will rectify that pretty quickly ;)

This one is an easy identification. Based on the long rear dropouts with eyelets, long (for a Pinarello) chain stays and dual bottle bosses, it's a 1983-1984 Pinarello Turismo. OEM components were Campagnolo Gran Sport. From what I can see, it's mostly OEM with notable exceptions of the rear derailleur, chainrings, saddle and pedals. The OEM rear derailleur was a Campagnolo Rally. As others have noted, a repaint and new decals are highly likely. This is a fairly rare model. Enjoy your new acquisition!

[MENTION=20650]T-Mar[/MENTION], thanks for the model and year ID. I was hoping that you might be able to ID it. I won't actually have it for a week or so, but I plan to keep it as-is for the most part. Saddle and pedals will be replaced, but the remainder will stay as-is. I am pretty sure it is a repaint, and the decals for a roughly 40 year old frame are almost never in that condition. The paint around the rear axle is too good to be original too. The panto on the stem and seatpost look clean. This will be a nice project to polish up and ride. I guess I found my Eroica bike now.

I believe the pantographed seat post and stem are OEM. A few Turismo have surfaced in the past. Most had the pantographed seat post. While none had the pantographed stem, it is far more common to replace a stem, to achieve a proper fit. Also, extant catalogs from 1982 & 1985, show pantographed stems,even on mid-range models. The only feature that you frame lacks compared to the others is a pump peg (Pinarello called it a pump bump) but your short head tube would prevent this feature. BTW, the spec'd tubeset was Columbus SL. FYI, all the other Turismo were reported with R-code serial numbers.I will be interested to know if yours is the same.

Even without the pump peg, a Zefal should fit and stay in place due to the angles of the downtube and seat tube. I have a Zefal on my Cannondale ST600 and it stays solidly in place with nothing but the spring loading to hold it. I'm expecting this frame would do the same thing.

Except for chromavelato finished Pinarellos (Don't think anyone came up with a chromavelato finish that held up. Tinted clear paint over chrome just will not stay on that well), paint and chrome had never been a problem. In fact, Pinarello had some of the best paint finish quality in the business. It was only the decals that did not hold up after some time. Comes down to Pinarello not choosing the right decal maker for their bikes.....
the signs of orange peel on this bike's paint (pic of the DT/shifters) could mean it was repainted as I haven't really seen such on their bikes.....

Were the lugs ever lined on the solid-color Pinarellos? Just curious without having much experience with them. To my eye, gold-lined lugs would look nice on a dark-colored frame.

I myself have not seen the lug junctions on them pinstriped...... but could be something nice to add if you would want to, especially if you think the frame was already repainted. That would make it an easier decision to go ahead and do it for most.

Lovely bike, and all the more desirable given it's a rarely seen model.

They're not catalogued in the extant 1982 and 1985 literature, but I have a 1984 listing for one, so definitely 1984 and possibly 1983.

Speaking of "window fill ins", I noticed on mine that the color is based on surrounding color. Mine has both black and white fill ins.

I have seen photos of dark green metallic (probably Raleigh) with gold lining and it looks great. But maybe if I pick up a Raleigh, then that would be something to consider. I guess for this one I'll forgo that.

I've pretty much switched to SA saddles, but I'll need another one for this bike, so I need to figure out a color. Initially I'm thinking honey brown with matching leather bar tape. Don't know yet - suggestions welcome.

Don't know about white outline at the lugs..... might look too stark against the black background. Gold always worked good with black, but then it won't match the florette lug cutout fill ins which are distinctive to the Pinarello frames.... you might have to change those to gold too if you went that way with the lug outlines.....plus it will then not match up with the Pinarello white lettered decals.....
It's certainly a slippery slope once you start changing aesthetics on a classic bike.....

Ah, this is the Pina you mentioned. Perhaps we'll see it on the next Bourbon & Tobacco Ride? :love:
