Good morning clunkerers.
I'll have a read through and determine some category winners for both this and last year. There were some real doozies.

While we await the determination of the judge for this year's round, who else is planning for next year? Behold, next year's contender, currently mothballed until it is time -snip . . .
- early '70s Bottechia De Luxe, missing a seatpost, saddle and rear brake cable stop with mis-matched brake levers. Nutted 3-piece hubs, steel 27-in rims, original Simplex Prestige derailleurs with nicer shift levers, alloy bars and stem ... currently stashed with pedals and front wheel off and bars and stem turned in to make it a smaller presence in the already over-crowded workshop. The owner of the shop I bought it from said it had been languishing in the store room for eight years before he bought the place, and he's owned it for 22 years - so at $30 I paid a storage fee of $1 a year. We'll see if I overpaid here - next time.

Every year you people astound me with ingenuity, determination, and a questionable use of your time. Excellent work. I have decided to judge this year based on 5 categories because 3 seemed too few and 10 is right out.
Best in show clunker I split in two this year. Sometimes you guys make some nice things happen with not so nice things. @ollo_ollo and @non-fixie both had bikes that stayed on budget and on form.
"Questionable life choices" was a fairly easy choice this year. @tiredhands beautiful FFS is the pinnacle of form, function and, like a cockroach, will likely be the only thing remaining after a nuclear blast.
"Questionable regard for personal safety" was another. @non-fixie and @machinist42 displayed ingenuity, frugality and a well, the pictures speak for themselves.
"Likely most miserable experience" was taken by @deux jambes by way of Takara, the antithesis of fun.
"Questionably high amount of free time" goes to @rustystrings61 for his several entries and time spent on a bike valued under $100.
The bonus award goes to @ryansu who seemingly spent more time drinking than riding.
Cheers!!!

Seriously, I LOVE this challenge. Every year I get to rediscover just how much fun a cheap bike can be. Thank you and thank this forum for this!

First thanks to @Narhay for presiding over this madness for the last 2 years and second I raise a glass to the excellent craft brewers of the Emerald City who made doing a beer themed clunker challenge easy peasy. Prost!

+1, My thanks to @Narhay for creating this vintage black hole that gets us back to basics. I don't expect to find a bargain beauty like this again, but they are out there. Appreciation also to the seller's mom who hung the bike in her home and left it there so many years ago. Whether I do another or not, I look forward to seeing more C&V fun next year. Don

I found next year's entry ...
... under a tree across the street:
Sadly, not C, not V and I will need to help a small entrant with mechanicals before he can ride 100km. So this is really just an opportunity to tickle this thread. It also seems a good time to ask what happened to last year's entries. The Vindec I entered is in a cupboard in Tulse Hill, waiting for spring. The Claud Butler and Scott MTB are in my garage and came out for a family ride on Boxing Day, along with a 1952 Raleigh Sports and a 1964 Moulton. The Moulton rider did not love the parts where my promise of a fully-paved route turned out to be a little inaccurate. It was muddy and rough.
Where are yours today?
Happy New Year!

My Liberia is awaiting a handlebar & stem (or maybe just stem) swap - I now have a 9 cm extension SR that fits French steerers and I want the Nitto it currently wears for a Jeunet 630 ....

learning something new every day
I really enjoy this. Mostly because of what I can learn (both the easy and hard way!). I DNF this year because of good news. (see post #301 ) While slowly healing I bought a Centurion Lemans frame on Ebay and stripped my too large Elite for (all) parts before getting the miles in. Threw on a Megarange freewheel to climb the hills with. Fun. Then a few days ago the wife helped out by driving a couple hundred miles and two hundred bucks on new years eve to pick up a great condition all original '86 Centurion Ironman. And I owe this happy result to the screwball clunker contest. Thank you Narhay. I am looking forward (and planning) towards the next one!

The Gypsy Mixte went to my grand daughter a few days ago. She wanted it only "if it is small enough to fit me", so I spiffed it up, and even got that nice reflector back in place with small screws top & bottom plus some JB Weld. Saddle went all the way down for a good fit, but she's pleased.
There's also this 1971 Super Sport that was a parts bike for my Copper SS in the 2016 Clunker Challenge. I gave it to a teenager from our church. He did yard work for us this Summer, had a huge growth spurt and needed a bigger bike. This 22" Schwinn just fits with saddle and stem all the way up. He'll probably outgrow it by next year though. Don

Thanks, it has that Cadillac ride and turned out nice. Used up a lot of misc. parts: 27" alloy wheels. Paint is Rustoleum warm yellow, which I like better than the distressed original (Lemon Peeler?). Told the kid it will scratch & chip easy, so just live with it & touch up anything that really bothers him. He's about 6' now, but based on older brothers, still has 5" or 6" to go.
Sun Tour DR's & levers, Shimano 600 crank. Should have black decals, but those white were waaay cheap. That Koski mt. bike saddle is the last of several N.O.S. bargains. Heard others bad mouth them, but I find they are quite comfortable. Only paid $25 for the whole bike originally, and kept the Brooks saddle, so I'm happy with the end product. Using fair market value, it's well over our $100 Clunker limit, but most of us have "cheapskate" bargains laying around to build something similar for a deserving kid. Don
