What year is this Nishiki Cresta?

I just picked up my first road bike in years. I'm very excited about this. However, I haven't been able to determine the year it was made. Does anyone have an idea?

The only part of the serial number I can read is KC 216. Everything after that seems to have flaked off because of some rust under the bottom bracket. No digits on the dropouts as far as I can tell.

Some of the details of the bike -
  • handcrafted frame by Kawamura
  • Suntour Mountech derailleurs
  • Avocet Touring I seat
  • Dia-Compe brakes (unsure of model)
  • Braze-on rack mounts
  • 27 1 1/4" rims
  • KKT Pro Vic II pedals with leather Nishiki straps
  • Sunshine quick release skewers
  • Sunshine Hubs #5345
  • Sakae Custom Road Champion Handlebars
  • Nishiki Double-butte Chrome-moly tubing
  • Sugino RT cranks

Great looking bike!

Here is an '86 Crest GT that I renovated for my son, who loves it.

Thanks guys. I appreciate your comments.
@ryansu - Thanks. This is a big help. A friend suggested I look into this model and it appeared on Craigslist within a couple of weeks.
@rgvg - I thought I would be able to use the serial number to help determine the year but it wasn't legible. I'm still working to learn the year it was made.
@polymorphself - It sounds like you might be vertically challenged Nonetheless, I thought I would be able to lower the stem after I picked it up but the bike fits me
the way it is. It's a 25" frame and it's the right size according to a vintage bike size chart I found. The stand-over seems perfect.
@67tony - Wow. That is an amazing looking bike. The cable housing looks fantastic. Great job. May I ask what bottle cages you used? I'm wondering if their from the same time-period. Thanks.

I concur with Golden Boy. While the serial number indicates that the frame was manufactured by Kawamura in 1983, the MounTech derailleur was introduced for the 1984 model year and was OEM spec on that year's Cresta. It was standard procedure for the Japanese manufacturers to start building the new models several months in advance of the new calendar year.
