Somec

i just got back from picking this one up. Even though I plan on changing a few things on it, it’s always fun to find a completely original bike especially in this condition.I love the Somec branded pump, to bad it’s missing one of the Somec bar plugs.

Ohhh! That is a pretty Italian!

Looks like it's going to be fast ride. Very clean to. What are your plans for her?

sloar 08-10-18 11:37 AM

Not much really, thorough cleaning, different pedals, new bar tape and cables.

Very cool, love it when the Silca is intact, branded and matching is golden to me.

I have them on most of my bikes, several were painted to match, I buy them when I find a good deal so I can put them on if a peg is present.

Most of them work ok too, funny thing is people gripe about them but usually ooh and ahh when they see them. ;)

I think I ruined the look, but I bought it to ride. I may go back to blue wrap and cables later, and skin wall tires.

Unfortunately, I think you are correct.

Looks like a different bike. I'm a tan wall tire guy for sure. Blackwalls hardly ever look right on the vintage stuff, IMHO of course. And blue tape and cables would be spot on, but you already seem to know that!

Honestly its still a beauty, so enjoy the ride for awhile, you can always change things up later.

It was what I had on hand, it will definitely get changed. I’m not liking it.

Yeah, you took it out of its own special place on the timeline by ditching that funky bar tape, IMO. It's certainly more dignified looking the way you have it now, but it's lost a little of its original snap.

That bike is gorgeous as found.

Change it back and try to keep it intact!

Giacomo 1 08-11-18 12:55 PM

Something tells me we won't be hearing from sloar again until this bike is back in tan walled tires with blue bar tape and blue cables!

He's probably at his LBS right now!😀

With a white bike you need something to make it pop. The tape definitely helped. :deadhorse2:

I've done the same thing. I change my rider all the time. Sometimes it's plain Jane, sometimes over the top. That's the good thing about consumables, not permanent.

How DOES it ride? I rescued one from the trash that was too big for me before the internet and with stuck seat post and stem and then it went back to the trash. What could have been!

sloar 08-11-18 01:43 PM

Rides like an Italian bike should, quick and smooth. Not a lot of love for Columbus Aelle and Campagnolo Victory but I’m happy with both.

Mmmm....Somec. I pray to Merckx I am deemed worthy enough to own one someday...with gaudy paint and panto's aplenty :D

Have you looked into what year/model it is? Looks quite understated for a Somec, perhaps an earlier model?
