Niagara Cycle - Out of Business ??

I see their website has been down for at least a couple of days, maybe even longer ??? Anyone know what's up with them ? Also, where else is a good place to order cheap vintage parts ? I am trying to find some 24 x 1 1/4" tires....thanks

I remember checking their website a day or two ago and seeing the "down for maintenance" banner.

For a high-volume mail order business, having the website down for a couple days is a bad omen. That's all lost revenue. Either their computer/server blew up during an upgrade/maintenance and they're trying to fix it, or they're down for good - we just don't know.

Other sites to visit, off the top of my head:

www.universalcycles.com

www.jensonusa.com

www.modernbike.com

nashbar.com

FBOATSB 08-10-18 02:48 PM

Biketiresdirect.com another of many.

+1, Bargainguy. I’ve had good experiences with all of them.
Nashbar appears to have stepped up their game. I ordered tires and they arrived in 2 days.
Hopefully, Niagara is just replacing their website with something better.

Hmm, their Amazon storefront looks dead too. Damn, that's sad.

I think they're out for good. So that I don't repeat posts, my reasoning https://www.bikeforums.net/20496903-post72.html

I never ordered from them because their website was so lame, and their product descriptions were often incomplete, which encourages ordering mistakes.

ThermionicScott 08-10-18 04:24 PM

That would be a shame. I only had good experiences ordering from them.

I check out my LBSs first. Like to support the locals to help keep them alive.

I've had good results with Ben's Cycles. I've been buying from them for years.

https://www.benscycle.com/

Also Erik's Bike Shop

https://www.eriksbikeshop.com/

Good deals on tires from Bike Tires Direct in the past.

Ben's is an LBS (sorta) for me!

Niagara was/is great for small parts and consumables. The $2 items the other sellers dont stock thrown into a larger order kept me shopping there.

They were great in my experience. I ordered tons from them. Always timely and had great prices. If they truly are gone, i am going to be bummed out.

RollingBuffalo 08-10-18 07:56 PM

Wow, I just found this site...Bikesmiths ?? Anyone ever deal with this site before ? They have 27 x 1 1/4" Kenda's for only $7.50 !

Timely?? :foo:

That seemed to be the biggest beef against Niagara. For most folks it seemed to take forever to get your order.

I used them as a last resort and tried to avoid them on Amazon too. Seems like it always took weeks to get my item. I usually order from the U.K. for cheaper and get it in a few days.

Anyway, guess our experience with them has been different.

RollingBuffalo 08-10-18 08:04 PM

I actually did not have all that good of an experience in dealing with them but they are pretty close to me so that's why I had tried them...This could be a blessing in disguise as maybe I'll find some better places to deal with

Bike Tires Direct (aka Western Bike Works) and Universal Cycles are both local to me, so I often hedge that way. Western Bike Works used to sponsor my cyclocross team. There are many shops that are closer to me. Around here we get the luxury of being able to be selective about which shops we shop at to keep them alive. Sadly it doesn't always work even with great shops (Velo Cult ).

CliffordK 08-11-18 03:22 AM

Hmm

They always had a unique selection of items.

I did find their website hard to search.

inconsistent shipping times likely hurt the business.

The Bikesmiths are a LBS for me. I've purchased lots of stuff from them either on line or in person(visiting their shop to pick something up is a good reason for a 55 mile ride). Good bike shop, good people! Great prices on their own website and via their ebay store.

dedhed 08-11-18 06:40 AM

Both Bens and Bikesmith have brick and mortar stores here and have bought stuff from both.I don't think there is a local shop here I haven't bought from.

When I was looking for the rare plastic shifter I broke on my S-5 hub Sprite, Bens pointed me to an upper storage gallery full of boxes of dusty new & used parts and said, "Go look around up there". Didn't find any but had fun searching.

number1bike 08-11-18 07:09 AM

I also think Niagara Cycle is gone. In the summer I make a parts list order intended for Niagara to handle my winter maintenance projects. I noticed starting three weeks ago that more and more items had no price and could not be ordered. Never a good sign.

As far as their web site navigability, it was like an old paper catalog where after a enough time you knew what page a part was on without having to go to the index.

In the old building across the street? That was magical going up there.

Another one with ties to old school stuff down.
