Bottom bracket axel marked with 5S☆
I've never seen this marking on an axel. 3 piece BB is in good condition and I'll likley use it on my next build but I'm just curious if this is a brand or what?
I can provide more pics if needed but I just washed my hands and didnt want to take it back out of the bag haha https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...1662d6622c.jpg |

The 5S or 5(S) marking indicates the spindle is intended for a two plateau drive train and a bottom bracket shell of 70mm width. They are also handy if one wishes to mount a cotterless chainset on a 68mm shell with thinwall OEM cups such as Bardon/REWAX. ----- |
Cool thanks!
that's funny because it was on a three geared front set. It had plenty of space too. |

IIRC, they are ideal for changing out the crank on a Raleigh Super Course from cottered to cotterless, using the original cups. |
Can also be used on “thin cup” stronglight french bottom brackets |
The 5S spindles were also used on the Raleigh Grand Prix and Super Grand Pix of the late 1970's. I've rebuilt several of them but none had the "star".

Those arcane markings on BB spindles drive me nuts.

It did come off of a super course wo that adds up. So many bike parts have secret decoder rings haha
Thanks for the help guys! it's always fun to know more about the parts I store away. |
This is a sqaure taper spindle correct? Asking because of the cranks on it.

Thanks very much for posting John; was hoping we would hear from you. :thumb: If convenient, perhaps you could also post the crosstable from Sutherland's showing the different models of Type II spindles. This would give readers an overview of them and their intended applications. ----- |
