After many hours of playing around, I managed to download the videos from my GoPro camera and put together a short movie of the highlights of the La Via Dela Scalatore route, packed into 15 minutes, complete with music. Please excuse the rough cuts...this is my first ever youtube video. If you don't want to watch the whole thing, at least cut to about the last five minutes, which is the descent from Cedar Mountain, complete with the loud screeching of my totally overheated brakes. Here it is:
Click on "Youtube" at the bottom of the video to watch in fullscreen mode (much better)
Starring my fingers on the brake levers, @rccardr, @numbernine and others.

You sir, are a fearless descender. I would never go down that road that fast, on those brakes especially. I don't know whether to compliment you, or notify the California Highway Patrol.

Thanks to all who've written their ride reports in this thread. All very entertaining and most appreciated. It made me a little sorry to have skipped it this year. Well done, Lads!

Dave, I've been down Cedar Mountain twice now. Watching your video, my sphincter puckered up (again)!

For 2019, Heroic course riders did all 108 miles without beer! That will not be the case for all Heroic riders in 2020, as there will be a cooler stashed at the half-way point.

This year we introduce a truly unique initiative. Willy Mulonia, organizer of Eroica Hispania, has arranged a 12-stage journey to Patagonia primarily for CCE members. The journey will take us from El Calafate to Ushuaia for 1,200 km of incredible landscapes ending in Tierra del Fuego and the crossing of the Strait of Magellan.
This is a group of 7 to 15 people maximum, ideally with a bike or adventure bike in the bikepacking style. The journey will be hard, as it is completely autonomous without support vehicles. A truly heroic endeavor!
Dates: 7-23 December (12 stages by bike 10-21 December)
Price: € 1,790, not including air travel

There are far less people on this ride than at Eroica Gaiole. I believe that there were around 800 entrants total, divided amongst four different routes (some overlapping) and staggered start times ranging from 5am to 10am. I did the 80+ mile route which started between 6 and 7 am in small groups of about 15 riders roughly every 15 minutes. This system results in the maximum scattering of riders all over the countryside so it is definitely not crowded, especially late in the ride. I must admit that this ride was even less crowded than the last few years. I would have welcomed a little more company on the road though all in all it was a pleasant experience with plenty of folks to talk with along the way.

Isn't there always a good (bad) story behind something as major as deficient rest stop nourishment ? Good money was paid and the number of riders was known. Surprised that nothing has come out yet

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the event...always fun to ride with like minded folks. But after the ride, as I was fetching beers for myself and a friend, I was taken aback when I was told they were $7 each. I had to run back to my seat kit and pull out my emergency cash. As I was paying, another rider had to do the same thing - obviously assuming the beer was part of the registration fee as it has been in the past. I read earlier how someone was looking forward to the Coke at the top of Cypress Mt, that wasn't there. I noted the absence as well, and wondered if the Nouvo riders had used up the supply the day before, but according to the article on The Radavist, it was the theme of the weekend. I hope they work on this for future events.

Sounds like downward spiral, Wes out as director, no container of bikes from Italy as advertised or food, drink, swag. Possibly very telling, especially when the European versions attract 10X? as many participants.

Loved the weather, routes and camaraderie on both Saturday and Sunday. Was equally disappointed by the rest stop support and lack of calories for the stops other than Halter. Totally surprised that I had to find $7 for the beer at the Finish which provided a very awkward moment for all. Had persuaded a good friend, who had served as a major cycling tour director for years, to try the Eroica so it was a little embarrassing to build up the event and have it turn out differently.
All that said, I’ll still probably return next year with the existing project bike. Hopefully the kinks will be worked out. I’ll definitely pack more food and be less dependent on the rest stop provisions.
Prepping for the Eroica ride is a great excuse to get my kiester back on the saddle in Feb and March!

Common theme: "yeah, went to Eroica Cali, disappointed in (fill in the blanks)...but I'll be back next year.
What's worrisome is the big drop off in riders.
I'll be first out of the gate to declare that if it doesn't occur next year, many will appear anyways (see last year's Cino event). It's about the people, the bikes, the ride, and the food, in that order.

Nice Video @davester, I am beginning to think Erocia is Italian for Sketchy Road surface. Although I am sure the riders of the 30s would have just called that Tuesday.
