Bontekoe: the brand that keeps surprising ...

... me, anyway. Perhaps there are specialists out there who knew all about these, but they've yet to show themselves (consider yourselves challenged, boys and girls!)

I already own a few Bontekoe bikes, which can be seen here, together with some history of the brand.

The latest acquisition, and the one to trigger this thread, is this one, a Bontekoe Altec:

I stumbled across it on a local classifieds site last week and, me being me, I just had to have it. I did some reading up on the Altec brand, but there's not much information available online. One of the more interesting snippets of information I've found so far is this quote from Norris Lockley on an Australian forum.

The seller was the original owner of the bike. He told me he'd bought it in the late eighties from "the old Bontekoe" (that would have been Gerrit jr). They had ordered a batch of six frames, which were offered at various trim levels. This one wears Shimano 6400, with Galli rims, Cinelli bars and stem and a Stronglight headset. The latter came with the frame set, I'm assuming.

More pics:

Seat cluster with quill seat post:

Date codes on the - original - Shimano parts all indicate a bike from '90 or '91:

Serial number, size (C-C), and what I guess is the BB threading (other codes I've seen on Altecs were F (French?) and I (Italian?)

I like these Altec decals:

Worst parts of the bike are undoubtedly the lever hoods. And I haven't even seen them yet:

Will be cleaning up the bike over the coming weeks and post the results.

In the meantime, I'd be mightily pleased with any additional info on Altec.

I don't think so, there's some similarities but the difference really shows at the seat lug design, where ALAN always had a seatpost clamp and not a quill style seatpost.....
The rear DO's are also quite different. Plus ALANs always had a three piece head assembly and not a single piece which is more similar to a Vitus 979 and Carbone..

Definitely a French product, Stronglight was somehow involved ("Stronglight Altec" search brings up a few examples). Looks nicer than a Vitus 979 IMO, specifically the "pointed" lugs and the elegant fork crown.

Like @Chombi1 already noted: no. But, coincidentally, Bontekoe also fielded a rebranded Alan. But that was at least fifteen years earlier. And, just as coincidentally, I happen to own one of those as well. I'm looking forward to comparing the two.

Funny you should say that. Earlier today I was looking at what was obviously its major competitor BITD, and came across @randyjawa's 979. Put them side by side for comparison:

Altec also went on to experimenting with CF for the main tubes. I've read somewhere that these were ridden in the TdF and the Vuelta in the late eighties:
