Thanks @oddjob2. Just got on the computer to check in for probably the last time, our lights are flickering like crazy and I'm hearing transformers pop. Law you have power? I'm not much on phone surfing, but I may have to over the w/e.

Yes best wishes for those Cackalackians North and South. I really hope everyone gets through OK, but especially hope the Big Oak Drive in in Salter Path makes it OK.

Beaufort has it up across the road by the marina.
What's going to be a while, is to hear from Surf City, Topsail, and then down to Southport. They have another 12 hours of this storm left, and then the flooding will pick up.
Tar River in NC starts around Louisburg, east of Raleigh. If that floods, Tarboro and Princeville will once again get under water.
Princeville has flooded at least 4 times since 1996 and the citizens continue to refuse to relocate, spending other people's money each time. It's a historic town, but sooner or later, other people are going to withhold that money.
There is another community about 60 miles from that, Seven Springs, that floods constantly. No one has ever offered to buy them out and move them. It's a political thing, but when it comes down to it, they all keep flooding.
Seawater surge will probably affect quite a bit of soybeans and maybe some corn, maybe some cotton and peanuts. Hog lagoons will likely face a lot of flooding, and the final round of legislation may outlaw them. The price of bacon will rise.
Hope everyone back there is safe. 500,000 without power in NC, which will pick up as this storm heads towards Charlotte and then curves up the Appalachians.
You still may see some significant rain, Hugh.
Law, you hang on. Need something from me, you have my number.
Ken, hope everyone dries out and downtown Kinston doesn't see that ironclad float away.

I am nearly halfway up the Delmarva Peninsula, a few hundred miles from where the storm landed, but we are getting spitting rain and some wind gusts from time to time. It seems that Florence may pass well south and west of us over the next few days, but I fear that nearly all of NC is going to have a rough time. The folks in the mountains may have a bad time as well, as the storm dumps rain on the slopes.
The Mid-Atlantic has had a cold spring and a very hot and wet summer, and now this. I hope everyone stays safe.

I have a former coworker that moved east to N. Carolina and everytime i hear of a hurricane I make sure to check up on him.
My door is always open to him and his family if they need a place to stay.

There are also bike shops in the path of the storm, folks I used to call on all over eastern NC. Some of them are bound to be under water right about now and I hope they are safe. I've seen a water line at eye level in a shop in Rocky Mount, and that's way inland just off I-95. That fellow had been in business for years and decided to call it quits and get a real job.

There is a shop on the causeway in Atlantic Beach that would be OK at 5', but not 10' of surge.
There is also Riverside Bike Shop Kinston, literally on the Nurse River.
I think Dee is probably OK at Moore's Cycles in Rocky Mount, but she lives in Temperance Hall and that's low.

Maybe I'm a little cynical these days, but isn't "Thoughts & Prayers" merely the current shorthand for "Screw you, we don't need no gun control no matter how many mass shootings we get get this week." ?
I hear a lot about "Thoughts & Prayers" every time it happens. It's been worn down to a nub. It's become a joke. I would try to use a different phrase for when I'm actually concerned about people's welfare. Maybe, "May the Good Lord and your own common sense get your ass about 200 miles inland, Away from the storm." Anyway, I hope all our Carolinians and south Virginians do that.
God bless.

P.S. Have no expectation of posting on: "Where did you ride today" for a couple of days. On the plus side, bikes should be cleaner after this weekend... if I get motivated!

Reduce your intake of social media and avoid Savanna Guthrie on NBC, you’ll avoid the phrase that way.
I am an old school guy and glad to see that the affected Carolinians here don’t have a wisp of cynicism!

Typhoon Mangkhut doing horrible damage as well. I hope people are making it through. Every time a hurricane is getting ready to lay waste to someplace, this classic rock tune comes to mind:

I grew up in tornado alley. You hear people on this forum talking about the Hotter N Hell Hundred. Wichita Falls, Texas is also famous for tornados including this one.

I was in a different part of the city when that one hit. We had to take shifts guarding the business my father managed armed with rifles and shotguns. It was like a Mad Max movie for a couple of days. I have been in 3 and lived to tell about it. One blew the above ground shelter we were in away. We managed to fasten ourselves to some pipes coming out of the ground to a water source. The night before I was moving out of state, a Super Cell hit my house. My car was on a trailer behind a U Haul. The hail came on so fast and hard that I couldn't get to the car and put it back in the garage. The hail blew the windows out of the car and U Haul. It cratered the car and U Haul bodies into the shape of an egg carton. The hail was so strong that it blew out the double pane security windows on the north side of the house. The hail stones were coming through those windows, across the 30ft living room and bouncing off the fireplace like machine gun bullets. The storm blew most of the roof off of the house and shredded the vegetation around the house at ground level. I got out of there and never looked back. Sometimes that is what people need to do.

That was Steve Luper's shop. He came back and ran it for a few years, then offered it to me and I hesitated, shoulda coulda....

If you hung out in those places we probably met at some point. I spent 15 years making rounds down there, once a month like clockwork.

I agree about the "thoughts and prayers" sentiment. For those to whom it matters the phrase triggers (yes, it does) a response that is hard to stifle. But that's a discussion for a different thread.

I was thinking of Morgan's on Sunset, but everyone took a beating on that one. The others you mention must have sprung up after I left the territory. Moore's, of course, will likely last another century or two, probably with Dee at the helm since she's too feisty to die.

We've been out surveying properties for damage and I may be wrong on the amount of flooding we'll see. Now the projection is we may exceed the Matthew level.
Floodwaters typically take 3-4 days to crest, so this is just the start of what we may see

I think you’re right Ken. I saw a pic in the WP of a waterfront building in Swansboro with a couple of feet of water and a very angry looking waterway. My cousin lives on the waterfront about a mile away at Bogue Inlet. That house has weathered storms since I was a kid, but worried that this might be the one to get it. Fortunately they all evacuated to Wilson.
