It was a beautiful day for a ride in Central Illinois today. I took my 1992 Trek 5500 OCLV Carbon out today. It's not the most comfortable vintage bike I own, but it is my quickest.

It still looks a lot like summer around here! Only difference is the cooler mornings, perfect for that Sunday ride that has become so addicting.
Shadows are getting longer. Still cool at 8:30am

A little variety from a camping trip at Point Reyes National Seashore (Marin County, CA) last week to celebrate my 30th birthday. I've been off my bikes lately because of some back issues... So hiking will have to do!

The red leaves really stand out! The orange and yellow leaves are great, but they are just the background for the red leaves, IMHO.
.... plus.... everyone knows that the red trees go fastest.

It's definitely peak leaf color season here in central Illinois! I spent my bike ride on Sunday by riding through the parks along the Illinois river bluffs and taking photos. It seemed like I was stopping every 100 yards, presented with another stunning display of autumnal colors! Remarkable!
Here are a few of the photos I came back with, with an attempt to offer some variety in composition.

OK, enough of the tease! We need a DIY thread -- schematic, BOM, PC or PtP layout, photometrics and dimensioned drawings.
The aluminum box is the home made dynamo headlight. Nothing too fancy, but it does use a supercap and a boost converter to provide a fairly bright standlight with a 10 minute run time. Very nice to have.
Here's a shot showing the side view.....

The green thing is the supercapacitor where the energy for the standlight is stored. It's fifty times the size that I've seen in commercial dynamo lights with a standlight.
The standlight is enabled with a magnetic reed switch. This permits implementation of a switch without providing a path for water ingress. Fun stuff!

It was designed to use modern LEDs and optics, but I was having trouble getting the optics to mount to the LED star. Not sure why, but I never got a good beam with the Ledil Heidi optics and the 3mm Cree LEDs. Ended up reverting to the older Cree XR-E and Ledil Rocket optics. I'm playing around with some newer optics now, but initial testing is not encouraging.
Ultimately, it would be fun to retrofit my own (improved) electronics into a dead B&M light, in order to take advantage of a proper optical design. Granted, the "Frankenstein" aspects of the project would be kind of fun too.

Empty lake, empty streets, the sun goes down alone....
Dunno if it was the extreme rain we had all summer, and the ground being saturated, or what, but we had no real color change this year. Things are just sorta turning gray and shriveling up. Been colder/wetter than normal; at least it was pleasant tonight for the trick-or-treaters.
Out on the road today, I saw a Dead-head sticker on a Diamond Back.....

I don't think I can compete with the donkey, but here's my pic. You can't really tell it's autumn except the grass is a little browner than in summer (unless it's dry) - was an amazing ride up to this peak though (Dartmoor, UK).
