Autumn 2018 - show me your pix

Best time of the year, IMO. Cool mornings, warm afternoons, leaves changing color. Our form is still good from a summer's worth of riding, but the end of the season is near.

This ride slightly pre-dates the arrival of fall, but it was suitably scenic. Perhaps the judges can overlook the problem of it being technically a summer ride?

The ride starts in St. Charles, MO, just west of St. Louis. It crosses the Mississippi via the Golden Eagle ferry, covers a hilly 10 miles through Illinois to the Illinois river.

here we see egrets (herons?) and cranes in the backwaters of the Mississippi...

the ferry crossing of the Mississippi, looking towards Illinois....

looking across the scenic hills of Calhoun county....

A quick crossing on the Brussels ferry takes you to route 100, which travels along the Illinois river down to Alton, IL. Great views of the river bluffs and river, as well as cooling breezes coming off of the river.

the Hetchins waits patiently outside the Grafton Market while I get something to drink...
(I had to introduce a little C&V content when possible)

the view of the Illinois river south of Grafton is just wonderful!

the cable stayed Clark Bridge takes you back across the Mississippi (south of the point where the Illinois river joins the Mississippi, and just north of where the Missouri river joins). The bike lanes are a bit of a luxury compared to the old truss bridge that it replaced.

the bridge provides a great view of the northern Alton riverfront, complete with riverboats and the huge grain elevators that dominate this part of the town....

It's a great route, with the exception of the debris laden shoulder of Highway 67 just past the bridge.
Bring some thick/tough tires for this portion of the route, or have a couple of spare tubes and a patch kit, like I did.

Steve, back in Peoria (but used to live in St. Louis)

Awesome pic gugie. Great mist.

I've never seen blooms like that either Sightspeed. Beautiful. Where is that??

I'll need to think about this. Most of the area doesn't really do Autumn. Grass is brown, as it always is since about April.

The cactus blooms are in Somis, CA, west of Moorpark, towards Ventura. La Vista road north of Highway 118 (Los Angeles Avenue). These were just taken today, Sept 23. Couple more:

No camping, was a day ride with no cars not much weight in the bags, 32 mm. Gatorskins, 24 x 36 going up and 53 x 11 going down, managed to hit 40 mph finally, great ride, awesome day.

I got no pics. It's raining again, something like the 12th straight day. Instead of riding, I'm looking up information on the internet.

Rain totals: September 2018 to date

Portland, OR 1.01". 36.25"
Charlottesville, VA 3.48" 43.75"

I need me some fenders. Maybe I'll go for a hike instead. OK, pic from Saturday's hike in the rain.

the corn says "fall", but the clouds are saying "summer thunderstorm".

I really should have headed home immediately after taking the photo... <sigh>

It's been a while since I've been hit so hard with raindrops that it stings.. ouch!

Fixed it for you

Not vintage, but a "classic" 29er
