Thanksgiving Eroica Recon
Near the starting area at the top of Moonstone Drive.
Highway 1, mostly nice wide shoulder, chip seal better than i remember from a few years ago.
Tourist shot at Castle Gate.
Hearst Castle is in the distance to the right of the school house at San Sebastian.
San Sebastian store across the highway from the Castle.

Yesterday I did an Eroica recon ride on the old Raleigh. Wednesday it was raining on the way up from LA, so we drove Old Creek Road from Cuyucos, into Cambria via Santa Rosa Creek Road. Old Creek is crazy steep and pretty narrow with lots of switchbacks. I'd be walking, even with good gears. It was a nice day Thursday, so I rode the coast highway up past Hearst Castle to the lighthouse. Lots of riders out, great day to ride. Northbound had a headwind, but great coming back south. Due to family commitments for the holiday (eating too much) I wasn't able to go back and ride any of the longer route, but I dont think I'll be doing Old Creek Road anytime soon. We had a great dinner at Linn's Restuarant in Cambria, which now has some of the owner's bike collection on display. Woke up to rain today, all day, so I'm glad I got in some of the ride yesterday. Hope y'all had a great Thanksgiving, I did! 😀 If you're feeling strong, and the gears are up to it, go for it, for me, I'm doing the short coastal route, probably on the Legnano, less heroic, but a beautiful ride.

Slightspeed, great pics and lovely scenery for the ride! The folks going on the 35 mile short route will have a fun time with not too much suffering. Looking forward to seeing you in Cambria as well as the next Velo-Retro ride.

I don't know if your newsstand has Road Bike Action Magazine. It's my favorite magazine for bikes. I got the Jan 2019 issue in the mail yesterday, and was surprised to see a big article on Linn's Fruit Farm in Cambria. I met the owner's son, Aaron, up there during Thanksgiving. I knew he was a rider and bike collector, but didn't realize he was a pretty good racer back in the day. Anyway if you see the magazine, check it out. Lots of cool bikes, too. It talks a little about Linn's role in helping Eroica re-locate to Cambria, and a little mention of the roads they will use.

Likely 2019 L'Eroica ride: 1983 Davidson. I've always wanted something in that beige-y champagne kinda color.
This one has an interesting back story: found out about it through Charles Nighbor in Sab Francisco, who seems to know pretty much everybody. Robert Freeman did the resto work on the frame and chrome for the former owner, who sadly passed away before it was finished; I purchased it from his wife. It came with an all-Campagnolo drivetrain but not what I wanted to use for this application so installed different components- Sugino Mighty Tour crankset, Deore FD/RD, Tektro braking system, Nitto Noodles on a Nitto Dynamic Stem, Ritchey Corsa saddle & 6207 friction shifters. Those are non-gravel Gravel Kings, sizing out to about 30mm on the Mavic Elite Pro rims.
Yes, an all-UG 8 speed cassette. How did that ever fit on an Ultegra 6700 hub? By swapping out the freehub for an earlier one that accepts both HG and UG cogs...

New Eroica CA build
Thought I would share what I acquired as a base for my new build for the Eroica CA -- 1988 Bottecchia with Columbus Cromor tubing. I spent a couple hours initially with some rubbing compound working off the road grime and oxidation, and I've got a local auto paint jobber figuring out a custom paint mix for touch-ups. I can't wait to ride this thing!

My ItalVega is ready and waiting! It rides great and seams as though it will do well in Cambria. I found a 41 tooth Avocet front chainring for the hills and it seems to help with the 175 Campy SR cranks. The 27" clincher wheel set replaced the sew ups. Campy high flange record hubs with Stella butted spokes and Rigida blue label wheels . I have ridden it about 50 miles or so since the rebuild and I like it a lot! Joe

Thank you for starting this thread - I'm in downtown SLO if anyone local wants to train together. I'm targeting the 75 mile route.
I'm doing this for the first time and am just starting to collect parts for a "new" build based around a Guerciotti Record frame. Here's my question about gearing -- it seems contradictory to me that that you have this "vintage" bike ride on a course that requires mortal riders to gear their bikes almost to the point of a mountain bike. I've seen Eroica bikes equipped with mountain bike derailleurs and 32 cog cassettes mounted to modern freehubs and 36 inner chainrings. This seems odd to me. I'm in my early 50's and fit and I plan to run Campy Super Record all around, which likely means 52/42 with a 14-28 freewheel. I'm prepared to do a little walking if needed, but the purist in me wants to avoid going outside the spirit of the event.
Am I going about this wrong?

This weekend, I plan to start increasing the length of the "long ride" and I've been excited about preparing a "Nova" bike. But, after some back and forth with Eroica.cc, it has been determined that the only way to add the Saturday ride for those of us who registered early is to pay the full $159. It seems to me that those of us who registered early should be permitted to add the Nova ride for the same $70. Eroica is a big operation but maybe Wes can do something for us?

Equipment check tomorrow. The 12/22 is for training only. The shoes were a Christmas gift from my son who says they are great for clips and straps.
I fashioned a pair of plexiglass inserts to "prevent" hot spots. 14 weeks to go.
edit: the inserts need to be a bit longer. Maybe to mid arch.
And they need to be a bit more robust: right insert broke after 3,000 feet of climbing at start of third climb today.

I wear Vans Classics all the time but not sure I'd want to use them with clips and straps. Too flexy in the sole and easy to pull out of from the heel.
But hey, if they work for you (and your son), more power to ya!

We left in the dark last year. I don't recall the time. Maybe the community want us off the streets before too late. And maybe that is why Heroic is only 110 miles this year. A lot of folk didn't have lights last year and Wes didn' t say anything about it. He did mention something about wanting to see more effort put into our kits this year but everyone looked the part to me.
