2. The plan is the Santa Lucia....but given my condition the short route may end up being the one. Gearing will depend on which bike I bring and I haven't decided yet. Tires will be at least 32mm, likely Paselas. I climb like a rock.

3. Uncertain. It will probably be the '85 Losa but the '66 Frejus and the 2013 Hampsten are possibilities. I'm going to the Sat night dinner and staying at Palazzo Gugie.

Classtime, are you coming with the Schwinn Circuit and riding the Heroic? That's the only route that hits Cass Winery this year.
The Circuit is out and the Centurion Turbo is in. 25mm clinchers on stock wheel set and catalog spec gears doing the Heroic route. A glass of wine before a muddy return trip to Cambria sounds good.

edit: on the Satuday am hamerfest today, a buddy tells me he raced on a Red Turbo that he bought new and used a Campy Record Tubular Wheelset. That is all I needed to feel good about putting my Record/GP4/Sprinter Gatorskin/ 25s on the Turbo.

The folowing post he said "Scott aka choke on BF, Northern CA" so "land of Jefferson" must be his origin, much like mine is Title Town USA!

I would guess the trees to be apricots - they were in full bloom in the california central valley a week or so ago, especially north of Kettleman City along I-5

Greetings all!

First to respond to Bart's question, yes, I am the guy with the Mercedes from Texas. This year I will also be driving a vintage Mercedes from Texas with my bikes. This year's transport is a 1981 300SD that was my daily drive for almost thirty years. It is just completing a full restoration. The photo below is prior to restoration:

Now to the really important stuff; the bikes:

I have four bikes entered into the concours. I have listed them below with a bit of info on each.

1936 Hetchins Brilliant: original (This is the only 1936 Hetchins listed in the Hetchins registry. It is the second year of business for Hetchins. It is one of the few and possibly the only original pre-war Hetchins in existance.) It is equipped with a 1937 K series Sturmey Archer hub as the bike was ordered in 36, but not delivered until 37. The majority of the other components are Chater Lea.

1945 Hetchins Super Special Custom: This bike is rare even for Hetchins. It was custom ordered just weeks after VE Day and is a custom Super Special built up with pre-war Brilliant Lugs. The frame was sent back to Hetchins in 1955 to be upgraded with split brake stops, and stops to allow for hybrid gearing. It was also re-painted. The current restored appearance replicates the work done by Hetchins in 1955. This bike is also unique in the it has all of the documentation from new with it. That documentation will be displayed with the bike at Eroica. The bike is currently equipped with a 1954 alloy Sturmey Archer AW and a NOS Simplex Rigidex 35 rear derailleur with Cycle three speed block shifted by a pre-war Cylco indexed bar end shifter. The low gear combination is 23 x 42, but factoring in the AW, you have an effective gearing of 32x42. All other components are NOS Chater Lea. The front hub is an Airlite Continental and the rims are Fiemme Sprint sewups (tubular). This is the bike I intend to ride.

1948 Raleigh Record Ace: this is an original bike. The seller was parting it out, but I begged him to sell them all to me. The only parts not original to the bike are the Chater Lea pedals as the RRA ones probably wore out and the current saddle is an old but not original Brooks Professional. This bike has an alloy 1948 Sturmey Archer FW hub. Its current gearing is 25x46. I ride this bike regularly in Texas.

1983 Mercian Vincitore: this is my ride bike from 2018 and my backup ride this year. It is an original bike with Campagnolo Nuovo Record group and Universal 66 brakes. The RD has been modified with a Rally long cage to handle the original Nuovo Record triple front crank. Low gearing is 32 x 39.

I go by name on the forum. My name is Steve Bauserman.
I will be riding the 35 mile ride as I don't want to push my luck on a bike with a rather complex gear setup.
I will be attending the Friday BBQ and the Saturday dinner as well as showing four bikes.
I am staying at the Hampton in in Paso Robles.
My email is sbauerman@actsgroup.net, but I would rather not post my phone number.

So i have been getting my "new(ish) to me Ciocc ready for Erocia almost since i bought it last summer. It arrived in VG condition, with a full 1986 Shimano EX SIS groupset, 3TTT stem and bars, Mavic rims, the old bear trap pedals and Diacomp compact aero brake levers.
First thing to go was teh brake levers; hoods were gummy, didn't like the way they felt, and i wanted to complete the 600 groupset. so i bought a pair of NOS levers, and when they arrived, i was blown away by how good the condition was.Installed them and was happy. then i sourced a pair of 600 pedals and clips and put them on. Then I rode it for a while and decided the stem was too long (110 mm), so off to Ebay again to find a 90. since i wanted to replicate what i got it with (although probably a later upgrade) i went looking for that. i found a NIB stem, and installed that. I took off the black side wall tires, and replaced them with tan(ish) ContiGP4000's. found out how tight these rims were... broke first tire lever.
But all along, I felt like an Italian beauty like this deserved Campagnolo...but the Campagnolo i was familiar with and grew up lusting after was 70's to early 80's SR and record... not period correct for the bike which i think must be late 89's. then a member here posted a first generation Chorus groupset (almost complete.. missing brake levers, FD, pedals, hubs, seatpost). so i bought it and installed. went looking for the brake levers on ebay, and found a set with decent looking hoods and bought them. they had the original white hoods, but i also bought a pair of NOS hoods in black, just in case. of course i tore one while taping the bars, they just wouldn't stay folded up, and i pulled too hard and ripped one. so off the bars, and new hoods on.
Next was the chainring... the chainrings are 42-52, and i have a 39 on the way. but the 13-23 or whatever it was, wouldn't cut it. i went to Amazon and found a lot of 30 tooth freewheels, but they all said "SHIMANO" in big letters on the 30 bail out cog... I couldn't have that! so i found a generic 7 speed 11-30 (i had read 7 speed would fit in 126 spacing) and a new chain. installed the freewheel, and saw that the axle spacing wold have to be adjusted for the freewheel to clear the DS drop out.had to go back to Amazon and buy the special deep well FW tool to get it off to do that work. Now i noticed the 25 mm Contis fir well, and there was room, so i ordered Panaracer Gravel Kings in 28 for the tan sidewall and the off roadishness of them. broke 2 more tire levers and punctured 2 tubes mounting the first one. off to Amazon again for a tire jack and steel tire levers (C&V i guess). got them mounted, and was dissapointed thatthey are about the sam width on these rims as the Contis were! Oh well. Finally ready to go!
Well i finally got it on the road ( almost final form, I would still like hubs , seat post to match) for a ride i wold normally do on my main CF bike yesterday. since Erocia is less than a month away, i am nervous. I rode with my Powertap pedals so i can use this as a training ride, but otherwise how it will be for Erocia. Did 62 miles, and 3000 feet of climbing, but no gravel or dirt, but now i think i am much more confident.

Now all i have to do is put on the new Chorus Headset i bought to replace the Specialized on that so many 80's bikes have and ride it!
I guess this is a typical story, but i wanted to share the journey ( and i left out (mercifully for the readers) a lot of other details and ups and downs in the story.

I'm an ex-Big Valley guy myself, so I know a lot of those roads as well. There's no way I'm going to replicate the Eroica ride, but if I were to do the ride you posted, I'd feel like I could reach down and pull it off.

Good on ya!

Yeah, I could do triple that on my CF bike no problem (i think), but now at least i know i can do it on my Ciocc (probably). All i have to do is switch over to toe clips that weekend, and hope for the best. I actually fell on Sunday because twisting your heel outwards DOES NOT release you from the bike, coupled with the fact that old brakes are not as good as modern dual pivot brakes. fell from an almost dead stop!

When I login and go to my Eroica page it shows I'm signed up for the Santa Lucia route. But when I click on the download module to pick up race number it states module is not available.
And no confirmation in the online purchase page for my early registration

Has everybody else got their sign up documents/number?
Are we required to upload a Doctor's medical release using the "my documents" page?
Or can I just show up sign in and ride like we did in the 70's,?

I get the same thing. In previous years we just showed up and picked up our numbers on Saturday. It was quite a line last year so it would be nice if there were a different system. The line doesn't really take that long and I had a great time meeting people in line so it is not much of a hassle . Joe joesvintageroadbikes.wordpress

I did a 46 mile shakedown run on the old Legnano Tuesday. I've had the bike 55 years, but new wheels, and reverting back to the old school pedals 😥 required a shakedown run. I joined my carbon brethren on a club ride from Camarillo Airport to Malibu Trancas Starbucks and back. 16+mph average, which is good for me these days. Big time wet fog, on the muddy farm roads made a mess of the bike. I inadvertantly tested the new wheelset on a 4 inch deep pot hole (rounded at the edges, thankfully), and they came out round and true. A chain suck in a 25 mph pace line was interesting. The old 5 speed frame is resisting my 6 speed conversion. All in all a good day. I'm planning on the easy 35 mile coastal Eroica, but with 42/28 best gear will be walking the last 12% hill.

Clean and shiny when I started.

Sorry for the query, but can't find a good information source beyond the official Eroica site. My question is this: the Brooks saddle on my Nuovo Racing is long since dead, but being vegan, I really don't want to have to buy another leather one if I can avoid it. Am I SOL for any Eroica, or do I have recourse?

Any saddle is legal and acceptable for this event.
There are some new Turbo saddles out that are covered in 'nubuck' which is a type of thick-ish microfiber. Wears surprisingly well and is very comfortable.
