I'll be ready for rain and mud.
I WANT an epic, tough, heroic, memorable ride event to celebrate turning 60.
But I'm not going to trash my nice tubulars (Vittoria Pave's that they don't make any more) just for show... I'll be bringing my clinchers and rain jacket. And my POV camera to make an epic video.
* and dog poop pickup bags to wear inside my shoes.

1. Name, etc: Rich Shearer, aka bikingshearer. PM me for cell number and/or e-mail address.
2. Route: 35 mile Pierdras Blancas route.
3. Bike: See below. 1982ish Ron Cooper. I had it set up for 10 or more years with Campy 10sp triple. I decided to make it my Eroica bike with Erocia-compliant but definitely not period correct components. In years past, I've been on a 1961 Bianchi Competizione and a 1972ish Cinelli SC, both a bit too small: it will be nice to be on a bike that is more or less my size. The photo is from a shake-down cruise last weekend; all is copacetic. Yes, those are modern aero brake levers - I like being able to stop and I can no longer count on being able to be in the hooks to brake at any given moment. And yes, those are Conti 4000s. At least they have a white reflective strip on the sides.
4; Additional activities: My wife and I will be at the Saturday dinner. Otherwise, I'm doing stuff as the mood strikes; I decided not to be a swap meet vendor this year, although I still have a bunch o' stuff left over from last year that could use new homes (hint, hint).

It's scheduled for pretty much all day both Saturday and Sunday, starting about 9:00 am. There will be significantly more stuff out on Saturday than Sunday if the past is any indication. As jcb3 indicated, Campy stuff is popular, and there is a good chance you can find that special old Campy bit you want, at least if you are there early on Saturday. There is a bunch of non-Campy stuff as well, but it i a bit more hit-or-miss. Count on there being some interesting stuff you have never seen before. If nothing else, it's like being in a museum, albeit one that could use a good curator. Along with the Concourse, it's a pretty good gathering of the tribe. And that's before you actually do the ride.

At 46/38/24 x 13/28, I'd better have enough gearing. I don't think I've ever had so low a low gear (24x28); I usually have a 30x29 low. I'm not sure I can spin fast to stay upright on a hill steep enough for me to need it.

Anyone close to the bay area who is looking for a steed for this years Eroica event might want to check out some of the bikes at the Silicon Valley Bicycle Exchange . We currently have a few pretty special bikes for sale. As always , all profits go to supporting the non profit Bike Exchange.
Thanks,

Beautiful bike. I gather @brockd15 has had time to train this year:thumb.
As for training, heh, you would think so, but....
Last year it was my first long ride in 3+ years, my mileage had exclusively been 16 miles a day of commuting. But I did manage to get in two 600k rides in May after Eroica.
This year, I've had to drop the commuting but have gotten in a couple medium distance rides, a 200k, and now a 300k. The good news is that those rides have all included quite a bit of climbing, so I should be more prepared this time around.

Either one of those includes Cedar Mountain which has some extended pitches of 15% to 18%. With those gears you will be walking unless you're the reincarnation of the young Eddy Merckx. Even a 42x32 would be too high for most people to pedal on those steep bits. However, looking on the bright side you'll have lots of company walking up those pitches. Personally I prefer to pedal so my low gear will be 30x28, which makes pedaling the entire mountain just barely achievable for me.

I wish I knew the names of some of these roads, apparently Eroica uses their own names. Try doing Google search for "Cedar Mountain" and see what comes up.
For those coming in from out of state, CA weather has been strange and unpredictable this week, expect more of the same this weekend. Lots of weird weather blowing through lately. Tuesday was nice all day, then a couple of vicious thunderstorms passed through, partially flooded the garage and knocked down my 3 week-old tomato plants. I would be ready for anything weather-wise. It could get cold again, it could rain, it could get warm and humid, or it may be gorgeous. You won't get extremes of hot and cold in Cambria, but serious rain and wind are always on the menu there.
It's been a weird winter, since in past years I could look out the window and predict with pretty good certainty whether it was safe to ride that day without getting wet. This year, it almost always looks like it could start pouring in about 10 minutes. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. I think it's due to the prevailing winds switching directions constantly, a northwest wind can switch to a southwest wind at the drop of a hat, completely changing the weather pattern. Must be driving the meteorologists crazy, though they would never admit it.
Anyway, good luck guys, and if you get out of breath, do what I do and start snapping pictures.

I ran 26 front 32 rear last 2 years and made it up Cypress, and I needed every bit of it. Although I wasn’t going much faster than the people walking. As has been said before, the 6% portions are for resting and catching of breath between the 15% portions.
Cypress will be harder this year because it is at the end.
The 72 mile route misses Kiler, which as I recall isn’t as steep as Cypress but it gets narrow and rutted so picking a good line and burst speed are important to staying on the bike.
That at being said, good hill climbing skills and pacing are more important than actual gearing. A smaller person can make it up the steeper portions with a much higher gear than a Clydesdale like myself. And there’s no shame to walk, you will have plenty of company.

Ok, Spreadsheet is done such as it is. I count 42 BF members although a number also are listed with Classic Rendezvous' 55. However, I'm sure a number of BF and CR members are going and just haven't chimed in on this thread or I missed them..

Last year my Super Course had a best gear 32 front, 34 rear, and I made it up all but three hills, without walking. This year due to the recent weather and some health issues, I'm doing the easier Piedras Blancas coastal route on a 42/28 best gear Legnano. Here's some refresher pics from last year's ride. Some of you may recognize yourselves. I'm a decent climber, made it up Gibraltar Road, mid December, on modernish Roubaix without antique pedals, but the Eroica hills kicked my butt.
I made about 3/4 the way up out of the Cass stop on the pedals.
It wasnt ALL uphill, only seems that way.

Latest weather report looking promising! The past few days it was pretty clear that there would be some moisture on Friday sometime, but the amount predicted has steadily gone down to a light shower. Note, however tha
This is the Paso Robles 10 day report from Weather Underground. Note Sunday's high of 79 and cloudy. That'll be a warm, humid day if/when you're inland. It would be wise not to dally at the aid stations when headed inland if you're doing the longer rides.

My girlfriend and I will be there again this year. We'll be doing the short route and riding the same bikes as last year (Viking Hosteller and Bianchi Nuovo Alloro). Planning on attending the swap meet on Saturday and possibly getting in a warm-up ride. Will be nice to see some familiar faces!
