Bianchi Caurus Proto (MAX) build thread

After finishing the 3Rensho build it is time for a new build thread.

I have decided on the Bianchi Caurus Proto.

Earlier I did some research work about these Bianchis in MAX tubing and it can be found here (photof...it messed up that thread considerably but it seems like most of the pictures are back - but who knows for how long):
The Bianchi Proto thread

The build will be first generation and edition Campagnolo Ergopower (1992) which is within the reach of Caurus Proto period correctness as the Proto were around in catalogs for 1992. My frame is from 1990 (or 89) but I will assume it was unsold for a while... ;-) Which is not that far fetched as these frames were top of the line and very, very expensive. And I have to add - its colour scheme not very attractive! I would not have bought this frame back then. My original thought was a repaint in celeste but as @mrjav provided me with this information:

https://www.ciclimasini.com/images/90...i%20Caurus.pdf

...I changed my mind.

It has an ugly paint scheme that is normally found on low end Bianchis - as with the Caurus name. On top of the line Bianchis it is rare. Most Protos were celeste according to my research. I therefore want to keep it as it is. I take one for the team ;-)

The rest of the build will be Mavic Open 4CD rims, 3TTT bar and stem, Campionissimo saddle, etc. I got hold of some rolls of the bar tape that can be seen in the link above and in the picture below.

There are loads of shade bar tape out there but they are almost always white to "colour" and it was difficult to find black to green. I got the rolls they had I believe.

Here is a pic of only the coloured section of it compared to the fork:

I will start with cleaning of the frame to assess how much of the paint that has to be touched up.

This will be fun but it might take a while as winter is coming and the darker it gets the less energy I have to do things in the hobby shop after a days work.

That will be a great looking build! Am I the only one that thinks a black Bianchi with Celeste lettering is cool?

No, I guess that combo would be nice (black/celeste). Maybe I am misunderstanding you - but the colour on my frame has nothing to do with celeste. In the Bianchi article linked to above it says these came in "nero/verde fluo (mine), nero/celeste Bianchi (the one you would like), nero/corallo perlato, verde/viola perlato, fuxia/viola".

If you picture google "Bianchi Caurus" you will get to see one ugly paint scheme after another. I promise you...

I am pretty sure the one pictured in the article has the same colour as mine - even if the scanned picture makes it look celeste. I base this on, during all my research, not having seen any other frame at all in black and celeste with the same spray pattern. The ones in black are all black but with the Bianchi and Caurus decals in celeste. They do not have that green "fake lug" and fade out to black on the top tube nor a celeste fork.

Here is a natural light pic of mine - telling the true story of "nero/verde fluo" (black/fluorescent green - for you English speaking).

The "nero/verde fluo" might have been what they called it in advertising but internally it was called something else - at least at some point - as this is what I found written on the fork tube:

It says "verde germoglio" which translates to something like "sprout green" or similar.

From experience I know that by the time this build is finished I am probably going to love this paint colour combo. I know myself - bonding to stuff while I work on it even if from the beginning being sceptical. Maybe Bianchi knew more than I give them credit for... Maybe it is a case of ugly duckling turning out to be a swan in the end. Time will tell. I am sceptical... ;-)

I like it myself. The picture of the completed model looks pretty darn nice. The bar tape is perfect and I'm sure its just what Bianchi had in mind when they made this color.

I'm trying to figure out what Caurus means though and what language is it? Not Italian as far as I know.

Caurus was one of the oldest wind gods in old Rome and symbolizes the northwest wind that announces the coming winter. I got it from a Swedish/Italian friend. Sounds like a plausible name for a bike. Think of Campagnolos wind themed wheels - Ghibli, etc.

Ah, a pagan god. Makes sense now.

May Caurus be kind to you and the wind be always at your back! 😇

Looking forward to this one. Still on my shopping list. There's a white pearl one on eBay right now for real money.

Where did you find that bar tape? A friend of mine has a pink Caurus, with pink-to-black fade tape. I can't seem to find it anywhere.

On ebay. You scan the auctions every day, searching for "ambrosio" and/or "bike ribbon", until the right tape emerges. Like this:

Hurry up and buy.

Get them both. They are not going to be any easier to find in the future.
