Help! Shifter just snapped off
 

My Suntour VX LD 1900 shifter just snapped off the clamp as I was adjusting the RD.

I live in Cambodia and ebay isn't so available over here - what would be the outcome in getting a local welder to weld it back on?

Any hints or tips?

The shifter boss was riveted onto the band. The shifter is screwed onto the boss. It's not worth re-riveting the boss back on. Get another pair of shifters. You might be able to get another band with bosses on it.

You have nothing to lose in having it welded.

I cannot see the pictures

I can't see pictures, either and I have a box full of Suntour shifters, braze and clamp on. Some are even NOS.

This is what I have in my stash and I now understand a PM I got a bit earlier. Where is he in the US and how long before he bails to Cambodia? I am gone in two weeks, for the winter, spending my days closer to the sun. It takes about ten days for a package to reach a destination in the US. Anyway, what I have that might work...

What often takes these shifters out is having the leg on one's shorts catch on a shift lever when jamming out of the saddle.

So when riding in non-cycling shorts, one has to tone it down to a more-casual pace, and be cautious on climbs.

There was a fancy Italian brand of water bottle cage that was popular in the 90's that had the plastic grip plugs pressed in where the wire frame flared out into little wings, and those would similarly catch on trousers or loose shorts, something that could damage the downtube.

And I've had trouser cuffs catch on cotter pins, usually tearing the cuff.

Temporary fix by a Cambodian welder - I hope it holds until my friend posts out a NOS shifter he bought off ebay from a guy in Sweden. Best not to think about the air miles of a Japanese component being shipped to Sweden 35-40 years ago, then flown to the UK and on to Cambodia for my Japanese made bike!
