7700 reproduction brake hoods?

For some reason Dura Ace 7700 replacement brake hoods appear to have become rare. Can anyone enlighten me to an on-line source that would carry original Shimano Dura Ace 7700/7701/7703 hoods. Or maybe someone is already making reproductions? Mine are still intact but they seem to stay slippery more than when they were new. Perhaps ones for Ultegra 6500 shifters are compatible?

Thanks for any help.

Your best bet is to buy a set of inoperable STI's with good hoods.

RiddleOfSteel 10-15-18 01:29 PM

The 7700 hood shape is unique to itself. The shifter body of a 6500 STI is bulkier and more squared-off (I think it is less comfortable). Plus the 7700 hoods say flippin' "Dura-Ace" on them--gotta have that! As an owner of a pair of VGC 7700 shifters, I recently picked up a still-in-package pair of 7700 hoods at my LBS (that sells used parts as well as new). I could look in there again and at another LBS that I volunteer at as they might have ones. It's usually pure luck that they have anything like that (it was in the random grab bin of hoods, grips, and clearance tape), and looks like Ebay sells them attached to the shifters ;)

Yeah, that's a good idea. It also reminds me that I have a pair of semi-operable 7700 levers with good hoods. Right/rear shifter is toast (ratchet/release plate has a critical point worn down, a common inevitable fate for them).

Wow - Thanks for the nice explanation. I might ask around down @ my LBS as well.

In the meantime, to answer the OPs immediate needs: found this:

shimano Dura Ace shifter brake rubber hoods st-7700 New

No idea about source reliability.

Edited to add: see comment below by @panzerwagon - he found troubling indications concerning source reliablity when he investigated a bit. Caveat emptor.

I'm looking forward to these hoods and nameplates. Where is the RSX A410 on this list? I bet there is way more interest in the RSX brifter hoods than the 3300-4500.

Rules is rules, I guess.

I'm curious about a set of 7402 hoods...

About this linked item. Appears to be for the very first version of the ST-7700, not the later ST-7700-C Flight Deck model. The brackets are a little different between the two models, with the earlier model being a little shorter and having a slightly different shape. The brackets also differ in the area where the Flight Deck connecter is located.

I'll take your word on that, since I'm not at all familiar with the differences between 7700-series family STI variants.

But FWIW: the OP's original inquiry was, "Can anyone enlighten me to an on-line source that would carry original Shimano Dura Ace 7700/7701/7703 hoods." I don't see any mention of the Flight Deck variant.

Source appears very suspicious. Smells like a scam site, to be perfectly honest.

In their “about us” section, both links to their ebay accounts point to “unregistered user”.

Yes, the original poster did not specify which variant of the 7700 he is looking at (there are 3 with the 7700 designation). The 7703 is the left shifter for triple cranks. There was no 7701.

Yeah, that's certainly a red flag. I'll add a caution to my original comment above.

RB1-luvr 03-29-23 07:28 AM

for reasons I tried to explain in their OP, I can't see that being a viable business model. The tooling and raw materials investment would be huge for a relatively small market. I'm betting it's not legit. I'll be happy to be wrong.

rccardr 03-29-23 03:06 PM

Shimano owned those injection molds once upon a time. For some reason they made a limited number of replacement hoods for all but a few levers.
One can speculate on why that is the case, especially since they already had the molds in hand.
Perhaps this Australian firm has purchased or is leasing the molds, and has access to injection machinery?
Low cost use of existing molds would certainly explain the several relatively obscure model lines being reproduced.
It will also be interesting to see what actual models within the range will be offered, e.g. 7400- just the original 7400 non-aero brake lever hoods, or 7401, or 7402, or only the STI ones?

This just popped up on my Instagram feed. Also if you look at their two latest videos these look pretty real to me. Warning though, the video with the white hoods has a loud jump scare at the end so turn off the volume....

I've been chasing a set of these.

I've finally found a set of hoods for the Easton Sc7000 Tri-Sport I'm restoring. It's was an expensive bike when it was new but sadly technology moves on. Still, it's a nice bike. Thank you to the bloke who found King of the Mountain.

so did it work? I have some Ultegra 6510 that I need hoods for. This would be awesome if it comes through! I went to the site that said some "coming soon" but it seems to let me order them...but I haven't gone through with it.
