headset cups

30mm vs 30.2mm.

30.2mm is the standard.

I know an old fuji i have has 30mm that came out. They will fall right into a "standard" frame that takes the 30.2mm cups and those cups wont go in the old fuji frameset.

Can you still get threaded 30mm headsets for the older bike boom bikes like lower end fujis of the late 70s? I just learned today that bikes have 2 different cup sizes. 30mm and 30.2.

My go to headset for older bikes has always been the Tange Levin. Great headset but i dont think it comes in the 30mm size.

Both sizes of Tange Levin can be found new on Amazon/eBay. Not overly expensive, either. :thumb:

Ah i see a few now that i missed earlier when looking. The 30mm are fewer and farer between. Most auctions dont show the actual box they come in. Thats one good way to tell if it is 30 or 30.2. I love the Tange Levin headsets. I have run the super cheap Tange Passage and really have no complaints about it either. Good stuff.

Thanks,

Did you mean the Tange Levin or the Tange Levin CDS?

The Levin is a top end steel headset in the same league as Campy, actually much better!

The Levin CDS is a mid range steel headset made of through hardened alloy steel with ground and polished races. They have plastic seals under the cups. These were made in both inch and metric. The metric ones are scarce. They're available with both 26.4mm and 27.0mm crown races. Also, they're produced in polished chrome, satin chrome and black finishes.

The stack height IS 33mm not the 3.33mm typo. I wasn't aware that you could get them in 30.0mm and 30.2mm sizes. I never checked.

Tange Passage is their economy model. The races are not ground or polished but chrome plated over which flakes of in use. They're well made for the money - much better than most OEM headsets they replace. Again, they were available in inch and metric, 26.4mm or 27.0mm, plastic seals and some finishes. They have a 30mm stack height.

It's usually the crown race and bottom cup that gets indented and wears out. I've cannibalized Passage and Levin CDS headsets for their bottom parts to use as replacements for classic headsets like Stronglight P3 and others. These headset look classic and most people will never notice the change.

wow...thats good information. Thank you!

Also note that the crown race will differ. 30.0 "usually" come with 27.0 race, 30.2 with 26.4; but you can buy "mixed", too.

Plus... don’t rush and forget to orientate the black space back behind the head tube and the lettering in front. Yeah, live and learn.

that is how my replacement came. Orignally i had 30.2 cups. The 30.0 cups were a snug fit....i did have to use the headset press but it wasnt very hard to turn them in. I was going to mix my old 30.2 cups with the new bearings and race but figured they wouldnt go together quite right. To be honest i didnt try though. I have no idea who made the original heaset cups.

Hopefully this works out.
