Which Sekai?

Hello Everyone,

I'm Greg. I'm new.

Today I bought an aqua-colored Sekai ten speed but the downtube decal is missing so I can't tell what model it is.

Serial number begins Y79 so I believe it' model year 1979 or possibly 78, based on info in a Sekai thread.

It's a fair bit lighter than the Sekai 2000 I bought in 1982. Same size frame (62cm) too.

I think it might be the 2400 model. There are no separate clamps to hold the cable to the top tube...the cable runs through three 'eyelets' that are formed out of the top tube itself, which I've seen on other 2400 models online. It also has a Primus air pump, a rear rack, and once had a light as there's a small generator on the front fork.

I would post a picture but as a newbie I need ten posts first...sigh.

Anything in particular I should look for to identify the model?

Thank you.

Does it have forged rear dropouts with adjuster screws?

Don't think so, no.

I read in another thread that seat tube diamater might help determine the model of a Sekai. Anyone have further info?

I continue to research other threads...

Search the above number in Seattle Craigslist and you'll see the Sekai I bought today...the owner has not removed the ad yet.

Anyone tell what model it might be w/o the downtube decal?

Thank you

What drivetrain is on it? Possibly a 2700 but my gut says lower.

nice bike for 80. It is not a high-end bike given the bolt-on derailleur hanger and the seat post, but Sekais were nice even at the low end

Specs can change from year to year. My leading candidate is another Sekai 2000 Super Commutor.

Yeah, a 2000 would be my guess as well.

Did they make the 2000 model in 1978-79? Thought it was an 80s model. Hmm...

The Sekai 2000 goes back to at least 1975.

Looks like I can now post pics. Here are two: my dark blue 1982 Sekai 2000 which I bought new in 1982 along with the green Sekai in the foreground I just bought in Seattle for $80. Second pic is the serial number of the green one.
