C&V and Utilizing Google Photos

I take 99.9999999% of all my photos with my Android based Motorolo Z phone and/or with my Hasselblad camera mod. The pics all are saved on the phone and backed up to Google Photos, so they are available on my Windows 10 devices (lap top and tablet) almost instantaneously.

But how do you post them in a BF-C&V post?

If I use the picture icon in the editing bar and try to paste a url, nothing happens.

If I manually try to add them by typing [ img ] https://photos.app.goo.gl/Vg81NQUB3z3Puohr6 [ / img ] (leaving out the extra spaces which I added here in order that you can see what I've typed), only a blank space is left.

So short of saving the picture on my device and then uploading to photobucket, flicker, etc., I can't seem to post a picture from Google Photos, like this beautifully restored Regina Corse five speed freewheel (posted from photobucket).

So what can we do to make Google Photos work with our beloved C&V?

If you click the "from your device" button, it should take you to your picture files in Google pictures. That's if you're using your phone to post pics. I think It's the same from a PC though. No url needed.

I'd love to know the answer to this, and I'd love to know more about your Hasselblad mod, pastorbob.

Moto Mods attach via magnets to the Moto Z line of Motorola phones.
The Hasselbald True Zoom mod camera adds regular zoom and a real flash, plus other manual adjustments for creativity. The pictures above and below were taken with the Hasselbald mod.

Okay @76SLT I understand how to do that--- but not how to get to my Google pic files from my Windows tablet or laptop. Piper and I are still confused.

Google disabled direct links about a year ago. Maybe theres a hack, but I don't know about it. With the new forum software, you can upload image files of course, or use a different service to direct link using BB code. I think you can still do it from Flickr by going to download and right clicking one of the image sizes to get the image location.

Testing...

Yep it works.

For those that haven't noticed or don't know, most standard BB code works for this forum.

I've had success posting Google pics when source images are pre-sorted into folders and links are copied from within those folders. YMMV

What do you mean? Folders?? Google photo albums? There are no folders in Google Photos. And what do you mean by pre sort? Are you direct linking with BB code, or simply uploading? Or is there something in the Google photos app that's not in the web version?

@Salamandrine didn't I use BB code as an example in my original post (remember I added the extra spaces in order that the text/coding showed up)? In that case I went to Google Photos and under the "Share" icone I selected "get link" and then tried pasting it into the BB code for images. I also tried using the Image icon in the BF editing menu, and again no luck.

As a test, here is an image of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts I took. And here it is pasted into the BB Code for Images---

(EDIT: Above is where I inserted the BB Code [ img ] [ /img ])
Why does one work and the other does not? Is there a way to fiddle with the URL and make it appear? Or has Google completely taken control of our lives by hijacking the use of our photos as well?

Well this might be a work around, albeit not the best. Somehow I have linked my Google Photos to the "Photos" app in Windows 10, which backs them up to my MS One Drive account. In the above I clicked on the Image Icon in the BF editing bar and then dragged and dropped the two images into the dialog box.

Unfortunately they were uploaded in gigantic size and you have to scroll around to see the entire photo. Is there a means to "down size" the photo once it is uploaded into BF?
Edit Comment: Once I posted the pictures did shrink to fit my screen, so that is good. Maybe this is the solution.

Sorry, I meant Albums which are folders.
When I take a pic with my mobile I share it to Google photos. When I get to my desktop, I sign into Google, open the Photos page (look at the 9 squares beside your icon) in my browser and sort my pics into albums. Then I open a photo from within the album and copy link with a right click on a PC.

25 years of staring at monitors for a living has made me averse to using my mobile screen too much. I think screens under 26 inches should be illegal.

I believe Googles changes were meant to increase use of their social media platform and also better track users within the Google ecosystem, not for building a better photo platform. If you use Facebook or Google to sign in at membership sites, you have basically given the 2 companies to track all of your online activity.

I like dropbox, but their free storage is somewhat limited. You can generate a jpg url link easily.
I use icloud for storage nad backup, but it is not good for sharin*.

A test with "copy image" from Google album and a paste directly into the message editing window, bypassing the "image" button altogether....to see if others besides ME can see the pic...

Agreed. I use Google for pictures, sharing professional documents (Drive) and browsing. WeTransfer+ for file tranfers. No other social media, none. Unique passwords for all professsional and personal sites, never sign into anything with Google.

I'm currently migrating to Linux as I develop the chops. Mr Robot wanna-be.

I used to share all my photos from google photos, but I don't think it works anymore. With the method I used to use, I get an invalid URL error from BF. I've started uploading smaller files to the new BF album, which takes a few more steps, but the smaller images are more user friendly.

Yup. I was thinking that the pastor was talking about INLINE images in posts, as opposed to LINKING to a photo, but it seems like both your and my experiment worked. Couple folks saw my Blue Ridge Parkway Miyata shot, and I can see your cardboard wrapped-bike....

OK, that's how I used to do it when I used Google photos -- and Picasa before that. About a year ago or a bit more it stopped working. Actually it would appear to work as long as you were logged in to google, but the link would break when you logged off. The link was no longer a normal URL location ending with (for example) .jpg, but some sort of code that ends in .no. I don't know what that suffix does or means, other than no fun.

Anyway, maybe it has been re-enabled. I haven't tried in ages, and basically stopped using google photos. Perhaps many others did the same. Let's try ....

yup. I think it's the new BF website design. When you plug in the Google photo URL it 'upoads' the file, making the link redundant.

Is there any downside to just posting the photo straight to the forum using the icon above the text box? Is there a resolution penalty?

I know that happens if you use the image button to upload. but I just linked old school with BB code in line, the basic one: (img)picture.url(/img)
(substitute square brackets for parentheses - apparently the "code" bb code doesn't work on this forum)

I just tried pasting the url into a new browser window, after logging out of everything and clearing my caches, and the link still is live. So Google obviously changed their minds about direct links. I guess that's good, but their flippancy in quietly disabling and re-enabling this is a little annoying. I don't trust them to not randomly turn it off again.

Well anyway we can directly upload images now to this forum at leat. Not really a downside to that method. I guess you can't take them down once they go up, which might bug some people.
