I've ordered the Dia-Compe 980 canti's for the narrow studs on the front of my bike. I'll let you all know if they fit.

Wow, never saw those before, they look fantastic. I'll have to keep them in mind for future builds. User reviews warn that they're not appropriate for older cantilever spacing, though.

Curious to hear if these new DC brakes work. I've seen a mention of some older XT units working on narrow spacing, but I've never had a set to test.Would love to have some more options for my Schwinn Passage.

Since the XC Pro brakes work- that would mean the variants of that should work as well- the DC986 and 987 and the Ritchey cantilevers.

I have a 1986 Passage as well that I like a lot.
I also ran into this issue of narrow spacing of the brake mount posts.
I tried Tektro 720 and TRP Eurox cantilever brakes
and could not get either to work
so I reinstalled the original Dia Compe's with new Koolstop pads.
I may try some of these other suggestions.
I am running 700c wheels on mine.

I have a strong sense that they new 980’s will not work on a narrow fork. Pretty tough to find anything other than the old DC’s that will work properly on those posts, sadly.

Also- The front post spacing on my 1984 Voyageur SP is 50mm (*!!!!*). It originally came with DiaCompe 981s. The Suntour XC Pros work fine there-

Dia Compe supplied these with fairly thick pads compared to modern Tektro's which use a holder.
But they do work and stop the bike pretty well, once I replaced the stock pads with the narrower Tektro pads. My guess is that a pair of Koolstop thinlines will work best so I will be ordering the salmon colored ones shortly.

I have read in the past the the thinlines are the way to go for these types of troubles. If the angle formed by the pad holder and the arm of the canti could be made just slightly smaller all of these modern canti's would fit a lot better.

Just curious - was this frame originally built around 27" wheels, and converted to 700c? Looks like the Dia Compe's work well for the spacing (and look great).

Hard to tell. This particular model has been around for quite some time and as far as I can tell only came with 700C rims. That has been the standard around here for a long time.

I understand that rim width is a factor, so if you've found success please indicate this info. I have multiple 700c rims available, with various widths, and plan to experiment.
I've already found success using early 90s Deore LX cantis as well as the original PT15 DC cantis... but really looking for something shiny and new. Lame, I know!
