From Horror to Sublime

Horror: I never understand this, a perfectly nice Fuji Mixte that has been rattle can spray painted, frame, seat post and smudges on the seat, was this a primer coat or intended to be a rat bike, though it looks like it has new tires?

To Sublime: It's probably a reproduction, but they did such a nice job and look at all those flowing lines and that built in areo light! On a trike, guess for those late night feeding rides? What a lovely thing, recalls some of the great pre-war coach built cars and airplanes.

My sentiments exactly. May I offer up Exhibit B, later I.D. as 1987 Sirrus frame set. Why bother to remove original paint, but manage to leave chunks here & there prior to the spray bomb? I cleaned it all off and did a better re-paint using just a brush! Don

Don't have example of the sublime, but a good renovation or proper repair is sublime indeed. Don

Ex. 1937 Delta Scroll Saw (1958 Delta RAS in background). Sublime = a design which is not only functional, but beautiful.

"From Horror to Sublime" should be the new official title of the "Before and After" thread.

Oh Man woodworking powered or hand tools, that's a Forum unto itself.

Old things are still old, but there's a feel to a well built thing, it's not just materials it's the thought and attention to design, detail, function and then there's those moments you find the art, craftsmanship, soul. Like porn's famous quote "I know it when I see it", you do the same when you see or touch something made with these qualities.

That to me is the sublime.
