@uncle uncle, some of us are lucky enough to live near each other. Maybe you can make it to one of our distant (from you) rides.

Not sure what post or posts OP is referring to, but as a general rule I would agree. On the other hand, there is criticism in everything we do, and if you can't accept any negative thought then its better to never put anything forth for others to comment on. If its not there, then nobody can say anything bad about it.
Criticisms...constructive criticisms, help us get better. But even when it isn't constructive, it still teaches that there will always be some amount of diversity in everything we do; and that we need to develop a thick skin so we know when to take something to heart and when to just ignore it completely.

lol You don't see as much on here, but it's quite common to see in the vintage BMX scene. There's just so many guys that take a perfect survivor paint job and decals just to get the bike powder coated the wrong color and they end up selling it!

Wonder what was so terrible that this thread came from the bad thread.
I've missed some things in the whopping 2 or so day I wasn't on c&v!
unfortunate to see this thread as the c&v forum is the nicest, most supportive, and most knowledgeable forum on here

There's plenty of leeway for all kinds of diversions tangentially related to C&V bikes- once you start posting things that don't belong here as a focal point rather than a tangent... there's other forums for that.

I don't remembering anyone being a jerk about any of my bike post on here. One guy was a jerk when I posted about software for mobile viewing but so what as he was stuck in 2004.
I did get put down by a bunch of snobs at the race in Charlotte 8 years ago. After the race I was riding my 1987 7/11 team bike and some guys on there latest hot bike were having fun laughing at the old guy ridding the Huffy bike. I went by the Eddy Merckx tent and one guy there new what the bike was and he drooled all over the bike as he had never seen one before. Some times you have to just grin and bare it.

How many "perfect survivor" BMX bikes are there? I thought that was partially what drives the prices on those- they got customized then ridden into the ground and passed around and ridden farther into the ground!

I was recently a Course Marshall for a local crit race, and there was a guy on a steel Bianchi in the peloton. I was pulling for him. He didn't end up on the podium, but he certainly wasn't the slowest. So he definitely smoked many riders on new $10,000 carbon racers. Sadly, he may have been faster on a lighter carbon bike, but it was good to see, none-the-less. I can't remember if he was in the Cat 1/2 race or the Cat 3/4, but it he was definitely mixed in with serious racers, and was the only steel bike I saw in the entire event.

I got beat up PX10 recently; I posted asking about how to clean it up.....etc. Another BF poster said, "I would never own (or ride) a bike in that condition". And something about how his bikes need to be presentable, (I guess to impress guys at the coffee shop). I thought it was mean spirited. This Px10 is cleaning up just fine; its hand-made; beautiful and has survived +50 years in a world that values cheap, disposable things.
When the weather gets better, this PX10 will be back on the road after sitting in a garage after 30 years.

My favorite bike I have ever owned was a very weathered 1973 World Voyageur. Since most of the original parts were either missing or broken, I just grabbed what I had laying around to built it. I kind of regret selling it. I've owned four other World Voyageurs, a couple in outstanding, perfect condition. None of them hit me the same way.
Now all that being said, I really don't need validation from others whether my build made any sense, financially or otherwise.

Years ago, I was a pretty decent (but not great) downhill snow skier. Anyway, I always had garage sale skis, non-matching gear/clothing, etc. I remember being quizzed by the lift operator "Are you SURE you want to go up this lift?" (It only serviced a black diamond run) I liked being a surprise skill wise, rather than the posers I saw with the latest and greatest, that couldn't ski worth a damn.
I have a friend that entered a local cyclocross race. He took his daily commuter, which has a paperboy steel front Wald basket on it. He finished fourth. I can only image him passing other riders with the latest and greatest technology. Priceless!!!

You and @crank_addict need to compare notes. He's over the moon about the same bike.
Given what the two of you know about bikes, there's something there. You've both forgotten more than I know about bikes.

My favorite bike is a $15 garage sale find, in deplorable condition. Many would have advised I toss it. But it suits me fine! But its not something that would be sought out as "collectible".

I hear ya!! What do collectors do in any hobby, They buy things that they wish they could of purchased when they were younger, or buy things that bring them back. I have a couple of bikes that have more money into them than they are worth. I dont care however because I get a kick out of riding and displaying them.

Honestly, the only reasons I can think of for anyone to be critical of someone else's vintage bicycle in a slightly negative or demeaning manner would be for the following sorts of reasons:
1) If they were deliberately making modifications or using worn or damaged components that are accepted as being an unsafe, and were unwilling to change their plans after receiving positive constructive criticism.
2) If they were deliberately trying to "cheat" by applying paint schemes, decals, or other reproduction components with the express purpose of portraying them as something they are not.
3) If they specifically say they are attempting to do a period-correct restoration, or adhere to a particular historical or contemporary style, and are not doing so correctly even after positive constructive criticism.
My $0.02.

The one place I diverge from this discussion is on the valuation thread. If someone pays $200 for a POS vintage Murray or whatever, and asks what is worth, then I give my opinion. Not everything that is old is gold.

Kinda hard to believe this thread needed to be started on C&V.
I think the golden rule still applies.
I always "try" to treat people the way i would like to be treated. And on the internet i never post anything i would not tell them to their face.

I hate to be old and cranky, but I was here on the day this forum was founded. Thankfully, it's never been a nasty place or really even much less than really, really kindly. I am sure there's been the occasional snark, but for the internet, this place is remarkable.
I once posted a bike of mine on another forum and immediately started getting @#$% about my set up. Er... I'm six two with a six-eight wingspan. It's likely some of my setups are going to strike people as just plain wrong, but never here.
