Thanks Robbie, we are now booked at the Dairyland Motel for Saturday evening - thanks for the heads up! I'm really looking forward to this!*

This event is costing me thousands, between getting my current stable ready and buying more bikes. What's worse, there's a couple swap meets between now and then. I'm headed to Little Rock Arkansas on Saturday to pick up this:

Somebody please make me stop.

Memphis is pretty dead but nice bikes come up at intervals in Little Rock and Hot Springs, just 2 weeks ago it was a white/black PX-10. Far enough away to semi-insulate me, but it can be sorely tempting sometimes...

Great question, which I'll pass on to Dave.

My guess is they'll be fine in the venue. We left them there at Bartali, and the Dare, with no issues. I'm sure not volunteering to handle that, but I can likely find someone. I'd have to take up a collection, though. May be $1-$2/bike or something like that.

Bumping. Appears registration for the show is closed.

The show, of course, is open to the public to come and see.

The ride, I think, is on public roads, and since it's officially unsupported and not an "event," I would imagine anyone riding "that route, at that time, on that day" would be fine with riding amongst a bunch of old bikes. Right?

If you are not registered, but plan to come and ride, let me know..

Um, it's not like that. This is not an "event" where you pay up and get some kind of consumer product or service. It's Coppi's 100th birthday party, and the person throwing the party can only foot the bill for so many guests.

Registration is so he can prepare bike stands, placards, placard holders, etc for each person, for the show. This is at his expense.

Registration is so he can prepare the food for the birthday party. He can only afford so many people to the party, as this is at his expense.

Registration for the ride is so he can prepare numbers and cue sheets, for instance, and can only afford so many people to the party, as this is at his expense.

The show is public. Anyone can show up and look at the cool bikes.

The ride is not an "event." It's part of celebrating Coppi. The participants are grown-ass people who can ride a bike and figure their way around a course, or not, because it doesn't really matter. It's on public roads and I highly doubt anyone on a bike will have a problem riding with all the other people riding on bikes.

There are no rest stops and there is no SAG. If there happens to be a rest stop, it's a volunteer. If there happens to be a SAG, it's a volunteer. One of the "rest stops" is a convenience store, just like Bartali, just like the Cotton Country Century in North Carolina, just like Le'Hombra in New Jersey.

As with Bartali (the single best time I've ever had for three straight days involving bicycles), there are people riding on Friday, perhaps, and very likely on Saturday, almost a given. It's fun. The people are cool. The bikes are cool.

Were I not registered, I'd show up on Saturday, with a bike in the car. Before that, I'd see if folks were riding somewhere on Saturday morning, likely either from Mineral Point to Mount Horeb (for draft root beer), or from New Glarus, through the tunnels, down into Monroe or to the state line and back. Or both. Then I'd take in the show, and find out where the after-party(s) might be. Then I'd maybe ride on Sunday just to see what C&V bikes are out there. Not sure I'd do the whole thing, maybe so.

This is at the expense of a Coppi fan, a cycling fan, a guy who spent time and money helping translate a documentary on Valetti. He organized and paid for meals for us at the Dairyland Dare. But he's not a promoter or organizer, or commercial bike event producer. He's just a guy who likes and appreciates the culture, giving back.

So, in a nutshell, I'd still drive 8 hours and spend a couple of nights in a hotel, because cool things just happen. Every photo from Bartali, and most of them from the Dare bring a smile to my face. I'm going to be smiling.
