Univgegas are highly respected bikes on this forum. |
The serial number indicates it was manufactured in May 1986 by Merida of Taiwan. (Land) Rover was the series name for Univega's line of ATB styled city bicycles, though it eventually evolved to include entry level ATBs The Five model, with its five speed transmission was traditionally 2nd from the bottom of the line, just above the single speed (Land) Rover One.

Like others have said, even though this is entry level, it is still a much better quality bike than you would consider "entry-level" today. Quality frame and components that are likely worth overhauling and making run again, just heavier than the higher end bikes and components.

this bike is still in almost pristine condition. I am riding it as the day I picked it up. it was in a garage covered with a tarp.
I have only changed the brake pads and tires. lubed every thing else. rides smooth and tight. |
UNIVEGA ROVER FIVE garage find.

I picked one of these up a couple years ago when I was in Chicago for Thanksgiving. Low end, steel everything, but fun to refurbish. Ended up donating it to our local collective where it sold for almost 3x more than I had listed it on CL
I mean, who doesnt want an MTB sized 22" 1x5 hi ten frame in hot pink?!? https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5722/...1afcc998_o.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5835/...32b06496_o.jpg |
That ^^^^^ would actually be an awesome winter build base. High BB, simple friction thumb shifting, and a VERY visible frame color in a white-out.

I have that same ride, kind of a canary yellow.all original but the tires. pictures in the gallery
