Peugeot Identification Tips
Hey friends!
As anyone who's attempted to identify a Peugeot from a wide range of time can attest, precise identification can be a real trick. I'm still getting my feet wet with this particular craft, but wondering if anyone had general strategies that have been particularly effective for them in narrowing things down? Personally I've appreciated the brochures posted at bikeboompeugeot.com so I can really precisely look at the year-by-year specifications and images they provide. What's been useful for you, especially when looking at examples with multiple owners that may have many elements that are not original? Best, HR |
Aztec lugs generally keep you from thinking you have a high end Pug.....I love the plain gauge frames and they've used Aztec lugs for a LOOONG time but many folks immediately think PX10.....

Thanks! The point about the lugs makes me realize I still haven't nailed down an ID on my new ride--it has lugs which means it can't be a PH...crap...

When I try to identify an old Peugeot, I look at the lugs (or lack thereof), chrome, headbadge, brazeons, dropouts, paint, and lastly parts. Oh, and any stickers and decals can be helpful of course. The lugs will show you the basic frame material (cadre allégé for Aztec lugs, lighter steel for Nervex lugs). No lugs and stamped dropouts indicate a later bike made with Carbolite 103. No lugs and forged dropouts again suggest a higher end steel. Headbadges are useful for determining the possible age of the bike. Chrome, brazeons, and paint can be used to distinguish between one model and another. So can the parts, although of course those are often changed over time. |
The year is easiest to tell for my new bike—it’s got a stamped/affixed badge of a style only used in 1980.
nervex lugs, 103 decal, stamped drops, down tube levers, “course” decal on the upper tube, “Peugeot” marked rear derailleur. Made in France sticker. ill take a look at the braze ons and include some photos later. ill post some photos soon. thanks for all this—glad to hear I’ve been on the right track with a bunch of things but I actually had completely overlooked both the lugs and the braze ons as good info sources. |

Also, that's a 1982 and mine is definitely a 1980 based on the head badge.
