Bad luck...
So, I am trying to get back into things. And in the last 2 days I have gone for 2 rides on 2 different bikes and broken 2 parts. Yesterday, riding my Merlin Titanium, I threw a chain and screwed up the FD. Today, riding my Schwinn Tempo, the RD caught a spoke and basically exploded. I will be going out on Christmas Day, taking the LeMond and keeping fingers crossed that nothing goes wrong. Hope me everyone has a good Christmas. |
Ouch! Was the hanger on the Tempo mangled? Did the Ti have a replaceable hanger? i wish your 3rd attempt has all the good luck in the world! |
3 times the charm, best of luck! Hopefully Santa will bring you a rabbit's foot or some other talisman to help with that. :)

Two out of two bikes had failures that sound like the results of adjustment issues.
I'd try to improve my luck by going over the third bike carefully before the third ride. |
Definitely adjustment issues. I am going to have to have a talk with my mechanic (me). It’s just interesting that neither have had issues before and no changes had been made. Good thing is the RD on the Tempo literally just exploded...so the hanger is fine. And the FD on the Merlin was a clamp on and it just tweaked the outer guide. I just need need to get new pieces and install and adjust. Now I have something to do over break. |
Wow! Hope your luck changes fast. Let me know what you need for replacement and if its in my bin, I will send it to you for Christmas.

If I had the parts, you would, too. Sorry it happened.
Often, the RD may have a bushing go bad, freeze up and explode. BTDT, but it got into my rear wheel, which cost a lot more to fix. I recommend disassemble the new one as much as practical, lube everything well (I'm still using Slick 50 1-lube on RD's). Good luck on the rebuild and re-ride. Check the chain rings on that Merlin, as well as your adjustment. If the cage is not too bad, Sheldon Brown says "you can squeeze it back." All depends on the damage, I suppose. If you need to go braze-on, I have a black clamp adapter you're welcome to (28.6) |

Bad luck!
Nine days ago, I blew (shredded) the rear tire on my Jamaican Bianchi... https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...d27aeba7a2.jpg However, and lucky for me, I discovered that a friend could order me a set from somewhere on the island. The tires were supposed to be here on Saturday but did not arrive until this morning. So, I rode the Movements motor bike... https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...08cd7453ed.jpg The trip to Black River, Jamaica and then back to my house, in Treasure Beach, covers about twenty miles, each way. When I arrived I was happy to see two new tires and at a very low cost - $2,800.00 JAM which is about $28 US and a heck of a lot cheaper than what I could purchase in Canada. Sadly... The tires I ordered were 700c x 32. The tires I got are 700c x 23 - not exactly what I wanted but they will work. And, wonder of wonders, for Jamaica - my friend, Conrad the guy who owns the bike shop, told me that I could return them if I wanted to do so. He has a set of 38s that I am not sure will fit my Ambrosia rims. Will 38s fi my rims? If so, I am back to Black River to swap them... https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...29199191f4.jpg |
