Not quite the workout I was anticipating
 
I went out this morning, hoping to test some new-to-me-but-old cyclocross tubulars (:thumb:) and some first gen Dura-Ace brakes I just swapped in (that setup still needs work). I was riding a trail in the Skokie Lagoons area when this happened:

I didn't fall or bash my right leg on anything, so I was no worse for the wear, but I had miles to go before I slept (about eight). I called my lovely wife, but she was out for a run, so I started walking. That got old real fast, and I was getting a bit cold, so I hopped on my bike and one-legged it home. That's a real good way to discover how weak your hip flexors are.

I had a spare crank in the parts bin, so the bike is ready to roll once again.

Wow! What crank is it? Have you put the two pieces together and scene any areas that looked like a crack was developing?

I agree, walking is SOO overrated.

Glad you did not get hurt. Now you need to get on the bike and pedal 8 miles with the other leg to keep them even. :)

It is/was a Sugino Mighty something-or-other. The dark area on the outside is probably where a crack had developed awhile ago. The bright area was the final straw.

That dark area possibly indicates its been fractured. Perhaps from a good pedal strike from long ago??

Yikes! I've been thinking about a triplizer conversion on my '72 Nishiki Professional and had just pulled a Mighty Competition crankset from the parts bins last night. This might convince me to leave it as-is with the peroid-incorrect Shimano compact.

Happens to all cranks. Doesn't prove anything about Sugino Mighty. Proves Skip rides his bike.

Actually happens more often than we think. I remember seeing pics of a lot of Campy Campy cranksets cracking apart like that and in other areas around the spider. Usually starts out as an invisible crack that works through the material for years and many cycles of stress and release, that is why it will he dark where the crack originated, from corroion and light where it finally cracks apart. I suspect the threads cut into the crankarm at the pedal axle hole is where the crack might have started because of "stress risers".

Not really. I had a campagnolo crank arm fail at the pedal hole while sprinting about 10 years ago. Broken collarbone was my reward. Glad the OP wasn't hurt.

Interesting you should mention that - my left knee has been giving me some pain as of recent (only when riding too), so I've taken to one-legging to rest it at times. Gives a new appreciation for toe clips and straps (especially when you don't have them).

At any rate, glad to hear you are OK. How did the crankarm break without a massive spill/surprise?

Fortunately, I wasn't going very fast. I was riding on a trail which went under the Edens Expressway (I94). With my shades on it suddenly became almost pitch black. I slowed way down and lowered my glasses to peek over them. The crank broke as I was ascending back out of the underpass and just as I was transferring my weight to my left leg. Also, no cleats so the pedal just fell away.

That is an interesting article, and I believe it would work as Jobst says - It would require a trip to a machine shop to have it done -
The crank arms countersunk, and the pedal spindles turned or ground (depending on hardness) to match -
Shouldn't be too big of a deal though, as long as the spindles had enough length for the pedals to still clear the crank, that is ..........

Pedal washers help, but even if you know that will you use them?
Steel cranks will theoretically break but not likely.
