Performance bike shop being sold

I can't find the thread and not sure this part was posted, new info. I have dropped into my local shop a few times recently as I had some great rides and friends out of it. Supported as I could, but was told it was the one closing. Anyway, dropped in a couple days ago and they are getting old warehouse stock etc, BMX parts, 27" tan walls, 24" tires etc. I asked why and the manager said they are now closing all Performance. The company is being auctioned off in January. His lease is up Jan 14th or so and expects prices to continue to drop. Other shops will start doing the same.

My store is fairly picked through but he said watch or call stores if you want something specific. Mine is currently up to 70% off and there are some bike deals. May be a chance for some to try carbon at a reasonable price or pick up some consumables you may not regularly see. Many bikes are new in the box and unbuilt.

Sad to see them go, because of the association with Bikecology / Supergo. Working at Bikecology Friday nights and all day Saturday, plus every summer and winter break, helped me pay for my first two years of grad. school at UCLA.

Here in Encinitas CA we just narrowly avoided losing my longtime favorite local shop, Leucadia Cyclery (leucadiabikes.com). Having finished raising their kids, Fred and Julia Breidenthal, owners for the past 28 years, had decided to retire and sell the shop. https://www.thecoastnews.com/tag/fred-breidenthal/ Now I eagerly await meeting the new owner when he arrives in February and showing him my Bianchi, which the previous owner had bought new from Fred's predecessor at Leucadia Cyclery in early 1982.

I never shopped there much, I used to stop in at the one near Philly, on US 202 when I was driving down to Dover for Alert Duty (long story) to look and get some CO2 bottles. I guess some were good and other not so, when I was working in shops I hated everything to do with them and mail order.

Still sad to see a business close down.

Haven't been to their shops for a long time. Only been there to buy tubular tire glue and Look pedals discounted on end of season sales.
I much preferred their stuff back in the 80's when they were just in Chapel Hill NC, doing mail order. My brother and I did a lot of business with them back then.
Still going to miss them as they had been around since I started cycling in college.

Sad! I was in Chapel Hill going through school in their early days. My roommate Brian was one of their earliest catalog models. He was a bike racer, I was just a bike rider. They had good stuff and an interesting business model for the time. Disliked them when I worked at Cycles De Oro in Greensboro when they opened just blocks from us.

Thanks for for the update. My good friend Bill is a mechanic in the G’boro store, need to find out where he’s going to land.

Niche to be Filled ..

They were already in debt to their creditor suppliers, s and had done a Debt for Equity swap, so the chain was owned by ASI, it's creditor.

Maybe the Owner of your local can continue as an Independent Bike Shop, after the chain has gone away..

Finding different bike brand-lines, and Wholesale parts suppliers..

I have used them quite a bit and always liked the store in Fort Worth. I had some points so I used them online today. Inventory is getting pretty low if you have points its probably a good time to buy something.

I scavenged their clearance section, and picked up good deals now and then, and necessary items now and then.

I moved away, so I don't really miss them.

Will be interesting to see how it affects Kestrel, Fuji, etc. Local bike shops will be able to pick up the slack in most areas.

bicycleretailer podcast had some interesting comments in general and on the asset sale, unclear who is ready to step in and buy the brands. My guess, an offshore entity, probably a manufacturer. Possible the current one, but setting up a distribution system is no small matter.
Fuji would probably be the most widely known brand. The whole interwoven Chapter 11 filings are quite a tale. There will be a lot of smaller performance suppliers who will be getting pennies on the dollar I think.
A few brands may essentially vanish.

I bought a Marin mtn bike from the local Performance store a couple of weeks ago. They were discounting about 40% at the time - most of the lower cost items were picked over but many of the more expensive bikes were still available.

The Richmond store is only at 25% off for most items right now, and there's no closing date being listed, but I'm watching them on an about a daily basis (helps that my daily bank runs for the Honda/Ymaha/Can-AM shop where I work is across the street). Planning on getting in there and picking what I can in tires, tubes, other consumables in the final week the place will be open.

I went in yesterday at the Roseville store, 60% off and I bought a new 650b QR wheelset for $40.
The energy gels seemed to be marked down to 75% off, bought a few of those.

I was just in there yesterday as it turn out. The stock looked pretty much the same as it always does, except that all the non-Performance branded tires seemed to be gone. I guess they were one of the early items to get a hefty discount? Most things still seem to be in the 20-30% off range. I picked up an 8-speed SRAM cassette for $21 (30% off). They had some nice HED Stinger S5 wheels, but even at 30% off they're about $400 more than I've even paid for a set of wheels.

They definitely didn't look like they'd be done selling things off by the end of the month.

Beaverton store manager said yesterday that they expect to be open until mid February. Seems they are closing poorest performing stores first, and he says they did very well last year.
Right now, the few items I bought from them in the past are 30% off. That’s about what they used to be on promo and sale days.

Hmm, picked up an 8 speed cassette for $13 after discount. I needed a new chain break tool, got a couple of tubes as well, cause you can never have enough.

Wow. Maybe I'll stop by. That store is in a horrible location, but I have always had great service from them, especially that girl who works there.

For the most part the people who worked in the store we use were the highlight of the place. That and the fact that if you weren't happy with a item for whatever reason you could just bring it back no questions asked.
