First Bike of 2019
I know I'm going for a ride today. It's nice that there's no hurry and I can go whenever; today's high will be around 50 degrees, no racing to beat the sun required. But it does give me time to sit here with my cup of coffee and consider -- as if it's some great statement or symbolic gesture -- which I'll choose for the first ride of 2019. On which steed shall I greet the new year?
No answer yet. I'm still drinking my coffee, the kids have begun a major lego build, and I've got all day. In the meantime, let's see your choice for "First of 2019." Was it just the first thing you grabbed, or was there something more to it? |

First ride of 2019-1984 Paramount Touring. I chose it because I bought it in December and I have only had it out for a couple of short runs. Took it out out today for about two hours and it surpasses my expectations. A better ride on 32's than I have had on 37's on some bikes. I am a believer.

Took out the 1985 Shogun 2000 this morning - mainly because I rode to the start of the club's annual 'Polar Bear Ride' and the roads were still wet and the fenders are a plus. I also haven't ridden it in awhile and I felt it needed a workout - 30 miles later and of course I got the workout. It's not a speedster and I was working to keep up with some quick riders - I managed with the help of well-timed traffic lights...

I took the Medici out for about 30 miles today - it wears my recently-acquired Barelli Supremes. I've been waiting for a dry day during which I could try them out, and today was that day. Mid-40s, but I was layered-up pretty good so it was a nice ride.

I chose the Eisentraut Rainbow for the club's annual New Year's Day ride. It was a chilly-for-California 32° when I left my house, and 45° fifty miles later.

This morning I didn’t go with C&V. Took out the ‘19 Fuji Gran Fondo for a speedy 31 mile spin. Wet roads, consistent headwinds and very little traffic. I haven’t decided which will be taken out of the stable for tomorrow’s ride yet. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...0ae224ab8.jpeg |

That is a really nifty looking bike! 3 bottle bosses, but sidepulls- I guess not totally out of line for an early 80s bike- Sweet!

What counts as a Polar Bear ride in Memphis? We had mid 40's in Southeast Kentucky.

Going by the time stamp, I'd already been out about three hours earlier. Not feeling like dressing up in cycling clothing, I just took the '69 Raleigh Sprint out for about 10-12 miles this morning. My only resolution for the new year is that I ignored the bikes too much in 2018, so do something about that.

A series of wipe outs on ice a few years ago put the kybosh on me enjoying winter riding.

Interesting that you said this. I did whatever, then got deeper into the afternoon and didn't want to "gear up." I looked at my commuter, all hamstrung with lights and oversized saddle bag and it occurred to me: I don't recall ever doing anything on this bike but play in traffic. Took it out on one of my regular 16-mile routes in jeans and hoodie and had a really good time.

Got 40 miles in today on my modern Fuji. It was about 32 degrees here in SW MI.
