How could I go wrong?
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...b3ae9c13f7.jpg Junk I tell you, junk. I hope you have a big trunk, cause I bought my bike... What are going to do with all that junk? All that junk that's in your trunk? Ok, I bought $5 bike. It's a Dawes probably a Galaxy I'm guessing 72-76 make. It has Nervex lugs and a lot chrome. From a quick glance it appears to be blackbomb paint. Lol, no it is covered in black tape. I'm going to be pealing it later today. Here it is in it's bugly glorious hobo look. |
at least it has a leather saddle!
|
Lots of potential there... :)
|
That's a Copperhead Road build right there....
|
Nice brake cable routing. :)
I agree -- lots of potential. Chrome stays, SunTour barcons and derailleurs, Brooks saddle. Way too tall a frame for me, but otherwise, what's not to like? |

The first peal, man this is like Christmas. The handlebars, details.https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...162e4ae25c.jpg |
Actually it is my size. Barcons alone would have sold me. The crank is nice as well.
|
Very nice...Tantalizing...Please continue with the striptease! Don
|
Really? 5$? The chrome looks nice from your pic and there are some nice bits on that bike. I think you did very well.

I had a Dawes Galaxy for a while. Akin to the Raleigh SuperCourse of that era: straight-gauge 531 main frame, hi-ten stays and fork. It rode very smoothly and fit 700 x 35mm tires with room to spare.

You might want to stop by the hardware store to buy a gallon of Goo-Gone.......unless you want your bike to be a rolling fly paper after you peel off all that tape......:D

Yep the cable routing left hand rear brake, it must be a British thing. ...
I was referring to the tortured bending of both cables and the inadequate length of the left/rear, rather than the parity. |
Can’t go wrong with a Dawes! |
The routing/bending of the cables, and the left-right arrangement, are both visual equivalents of fingernails down a chalkboard.....
+1 on the deal; shoot, ONE of the barcons is worth more than the price of admission.... |
Here's a few more. I'll have to see if I can get the electrical working. I got a jump on the tape.https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...311421af19.jpghttps://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...674e46bf0a.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...0ca7e31d55.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...cb50826e0b.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...ac17d500b5.jpg |
Very great catch. At first glance, I noticed that it looks almost exactly like the 1959 Viking Severn Valley that I recently passed along.
You're going to keep us updated on progress, right? |
Whoa, didn't even see the lights, at first. Would it be C&V heresy to retrofit them with LEDs?
Wait, is it my crossed eyes, or is the taillight facing forward? Is there some sort of time reversal parallel universe palindrome connection with the brake levers being switched? Am I really in Bolton? |
Nice! Does look early 70s. Dawes are tough to date precisely. Anything stamped on rear dropout?
|
A very nice early spearpoint GB stem as well! Nice pairing with the handle bar. |
:innocent: I'm whistling stripper music.https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...61f6518972.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...318d058a34.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...a8699856ab.jpg |
Nice original colour. Wounded if the rest is in good shape. Which Homegrown do you have in the background!? |

What's with the RD hanger? Is it odd looking, just the angle or just me?
I've made progress and bringing out the torch and hairdryer made big difference. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...8e5cbccad1.jpghttps://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...35177ab1ec.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...fbe79d3ca7.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...128f070d22.jpg |

That took a little wind outta the sails. I'm going to fix that, I've got flat black and bought some Chevy Bahama Blue. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...bd43807881.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...1143ea58a4.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...28bd49b60e.jpg |
Looks like a good match! have you tackled the chrome yet. Brass wool and WD-40 works wonders. |
Here's progress, it's looking really good. I brush painted primer over the scratched areas, then sanded smooth. I then masked for the flat black, painted, reversed the masking and masked the blue the brown edge. Painted the blue, 1500 grit sand on the blue and black to take the orange peal look and smooth the masking lines.https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...ef504e3bbb.jpghttps://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...c0de61369a.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...6e77ad44ae.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...7e3cb62449.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...72e484f895.jpg |
