Copying the old masters used to be a standard part of a budding painter’s training. Were they told to sign them or paint a beagle in the foreground just in case?
I know, different times. I get the issue but can’t get very exorcised about it. It still looks like a Trek with a really nice diy Masi paint job. Whatever, I appreciate the skills.

I think your bike looks great, and I don't have a problem with it. I don't understand why so many are against it. You may never sell it, but if you ever did, you're not just some guy trying to rip off someone. Being a bf member you can appreciate the unethical situation you would create if you sent it to it's new home before removing the decals.
Come on people, lighten up. When and if he ever sells it, he'll probably remove the decals. Have a little faith in a fellow bf member.

Well, I'm turning in for the evening. But anyone know the cost of a semi decent Unicanitor saddle? The Campy Nuovo Record cranks, hubs, derailleur, shifters, seat post, bottom bracket, Cinellii handlebars, stem, Masi Criterium Ale water bottle etc.? It's crazy! This is not a joke to me. I'm 62 years old. My second love is my 1972 Raleigh International. But this, this idea wrapped itself around my heart and deal done. And I wouldn't have thought of it weren't for the talk here of Breaking Away. Watching the movie again, man, was great. I have no regrets. I'm waiting for a few more things to arrive but mostly the spokes.

I can understand refinishing a bike out of love but filling in manufacturers markings and adding details to make it look like something else then I feel it is wrong.
You may honestly sell sell it as a modified Trek but that doesn’t mean someone else won’t try and pass it off as a Masi

This isn't a real Masi, either - but I doubt many here would fault the builder for constructing it as a tribute:
OP: I think your project looks great, and for one would like to hear more about how the paint process went down. I'm flabbergasted that is the result of brushing the paint on! And I totally get where you are going with this "replica of a replica".
Are you trying to stay with the original components used on the Sears Masi? Because at a minimum I know they used different bars as well as brake levers and calipers (the bars actually have a funny bend to them).

The only true sin I see is the Velocals terms and conditions...what was told to them? Were they in cahoots? Make the decals yourself, who cares. Bring in a legitimate business that has worked hard to build up their reputation and good graces with several current bicycle manufacturers...
For awhile Velocals got out of selling decals that said "Raleigh" Suits when J.D.'s said so. It appears they're back in that business now, but I've noticed those Raleigh decals are a bit more expensive now.

Nicely done OP and nice project. I enjoy this kinda thing. And I have painted a dozen or more bikes with Rustoleum, Testors, brush on Krylon. I really enjoy brush painting a frame, very relaxing. The decals are nerve racking though.
The best part is the enthusiasm and satisfaction you have gotten from your project bike. I too feel good about bringing a bike back to life with new paint and decals. I think you have taken it to the next level with your Breaking Away Masi. Cant wait to see this built up and then perhaps another in the works? Well done!

Even though this is not my cup of tea, I totally appreciate the passion, effort and end result. The big issue is what happens when the OP passes, and the story gets lost. That is where the trouble starts. A simple remedy would be to pull the fork and engrave a message in the steerer, with the date it was created and a signature. A carbide tipped pen and a few minutes would permanently let any future owner know what it really was, and would not visualize damage the work which was done.

There was some talk about using boat paint on bike frames a while back. I was wondering if anyone ever tried that? Seems like it would be much more durable than Rustoleum, plus UV-resistant.

First Rustoleum project. I painted right over the original paint. Little to no prep. Painted around original decals. This was what I called my camping bike. Took it on camping trips. Sat out in rainstorms and travelled many miles exposed on a roof rack. Had it for about 5 years . And was still in excellent condution when I sold it.
My last Rustoleum paint job. Just painted my '77 Bus in September. Used a 2" brush. 3 coats of paint. Then buffed out with polishing compound. I have painted it every year since I bought it 5 years ago. The bus sits out year long in Chicago climate...sun, heat, snow, ice. I find its the best way to maintain the finish. Its about 6 hours total to sand, 3 coats paint, and buff.
Conclusion
Rustoleum is a great product. It drys fast. It drys hard. It polishes out well. Durable. My bus sits out all summer, about 8 hours a day of sun. I havent noticed any fading.
