I agree. It's all just in fun. And if I had done it I would have skipped the (purist version?) of a free spirit frame and used the trek to have a decent rider too.

Nobody is implying that.
What people are saying plain as day is that one day he will not have the bike (when he's gone from this world or otherwise) and at that point he has no control over warning people that it's not real. Very few people can say that they have met or know the original owner of their vintage bike they acquired second-hand, and this bike will be one of those one day.
I don't think it's a HUGE deal but it is worth thinking about.

I'm more offended by the super-glued fork tangs.

Before OP leaves this thread in disgust forever, I was hoping to get the formula he used to get shade of orange. I found a similar color orange (Pantone 163C) along with the Pantone formula for mixing it, which requires 2 parts Warm Red, 2 parts Pantone Yellow, and 12 parts Transparent White.



I would imagine that a Rustoleum mix would require their standard Yellow and standard Red, but the devil is in the details, and I don't wanna ruin gallons of paint trying to recreate this color. Besides, I don't know of any Transparent White substitute that Rustoleum makes. OP, Please advise. TYIA.

Everyone understands this. I don't know how that could be missed.

What you and OP don't seem to understand, is that eventually almost every bike moves on. Some day, OP will be gone, some relative will find this in the shop, and some inexperienced person will buy it thinking it's real. It's almost a guarantee.

To me, I don't really care about that aspect of it--although I do think he ruined a perfectly good Trek--but that is what YOU need to understand.

Why worry about OPs afterlife and how this bike will be presented. Theres obvious evidence in the bike itself and here now they its a creative reproduction.

Well, for one, this forum is filled with bikes originally purchased by dead people. So there's ample chance some future person getting into C&V will get fooled and pay a ton of money for this thing. Just because it's a creative endeavor doesn't mean we shouldn't think about the implications.

I hated Door County as a kid, too boring, but last time i lived in WI, we loved getting away for the weekend as much as we could. Washington island is a great place to take your bikes on a summer weekend.

Late to the thread, but didn't we go through this 3 or 4 years ago. Some dude turned a Japanese bike into a blue special Eyetalian. I think it became a Colnago. He had a thread pimping the build just like the OP.

It's a good thing the OP's bike is steel and not Crabon Fibre. Because........then he could be accused of performing plastic surgery without a license!

This is/was my first rattlecan attempt. It had chrome socks that were flaking off. I tried the Duplicolor chrome paint on the socks. It looked good but wasn't durable. I don't think I let it dry/cure long enough. Then I decided on painted socks. Taped over the decals and got to it.

Hand brush applying Rustoleum enamel must be tedious and forever waiting for it to cure.

Anyways, for budgeto jobbies, I've had terrific results with their 'rattlecan' 2X single colors. Prep by leaveing any good holding original paint as a substrate. No reason to peel all the way down -just 220 sand and feather.

Give it two maybe three hits of coats. Then be patient or forget about it for a >> few months.

After hibernation, lightly scuff with a 320 or pad, mostly to tackle any flashing. Apply decals. Then its Showtime when you top coat with a two part urethane. The combo is very durable and likely better than any factory paint longevity out of Europe back when. Italian paint jobs always had appeal but terrible longevity.

I'm right behind you, buddy! I need to figure out which legendary marque I want to pay tribute to. Did any of the special Italians come in this color. That would save me the cost of new paint.

I think Masi and Colnago both used something very similar, surely many others as well. Masi's own Taiwan tribute was close to this color as well.

Anyone used the term Quasi Masi yet? If not, I get the credit for it. Kidding aside, the fantastic paint job the OP did has inspired me to start a paint test thread.

Why not decal one side Colnago and the other side Masi? Duh, never mind... that would make one side faster than the other..
