I've read your tribute page extensively when I wrote my review of the film itself. It has some really good information, especially as to the behind-the-scenes part of the movie. I liked reading about Garry Rybar and Tom Schwoegler and how they got involved in the film.
I've actually watched the whole series (most of the series is online, albeit scattered all around the place) and I am 99% sure it is La Strada. Dave refers to the La Strada to his mother (played by the same actress, Barbara Barrie) and shows her an advertisement for it in the pilot episode at the 9:18 mark. The advertisement that he shows her states it was made in Italy, with "cranks by Campagnolo."
https://youtu.be/AL7kdIAHtl8?t=558
The TV series itself wasn't too bad. Maybe not the best, but definitely not the worst. It was produced during a difficult time and was often overlooked as it lost many of the main actors that made the film worth watching to many. I think it is often overlooked. But that's my 2 cents.
To add something productive to this conversation: the quarry in which many parts of the film took place has been filled in, according to the IndyStar.

Don't fret over the quarry too much. I found it least one first hand account of people who helped make the movie say that more than one quarry hole was used in the filming (there are about 5), and the quarry is still somewhat open as a quarry. They are at the end of E. Empire Mill Rd in Bloomington if you want to visit them virtually on g-maps, which is probably the best way to "go there" anyway.

Spokes coming tomorrow. Hope I got the sizes right (fingers crossed). Once the wheels are done things will move more quickly. Waiting on another water bottle with a white top which I'll switch out for the black. Light yellow handlebar tape should be here soon as well. Here's a pic of some of the goodies:

It's Breaking Away
It's a genuine Breaking Away replica. I get it. It's a genuine copy of replica fake! I think it's true to the whole story of the movie. Love it and hope you enjoy it immensely. I'm getting ready for a spin on my 89 Nishiki. Not nearly the copy of a copy classic. Still though....

Really nice job on this build. I'm a bit against this overall. At some point, the OP will pass way, and the bike will be passed on to others. A family member may sell if off with a bunch of other stuff. Steel can last a long time. The story may not follow.

People still buy DVDs? especially at inflated prices? Breaking Away is available to own on Amazon streaming for $9.99...

I have to say though, anyone who bought this bike, assuming my Bother or Sister outlive me and decide to sell it as the real thing, deserve what they get. Why? First off, they both know it's a replica of the fake bike. Second to etc.:
There's the Trek serial number
The stays caps are flat, not curved
Head tube lacks the top/bottom flares
Droupouts say Suntour
No 'M' cutout on bottom bracket
Rack mounts
Seat tube clamp is hollowed not solid
That, and if anyone is in the know, the fake was said to be a Sears Free Spirit and has anyone ever seen it? If so that would be cool to know who owns it.
To me, I'm happy just to see one of my favorite bikes of all time come to life. Even if it's not the real thing. In fact, when I stop riding, I'd be happy to hang it like Dave did in his room and just stare at it from time to time. Or, as mentioned before, when I need $ I'll part it out as the parts are $. Or, I'll sell it as a 'Replica'. But none of those things are on my mind.
Considering the state of the world we live in, there are more important things to worry about than what happens to my bike when i'm gone

last pic post I swear by Grabthar's Hammer until she's finished. Might be two weeks. Ordered some brakes from Poland. So much stuff from Poland, Slovakia and Romaina I tell ya!
All was going well until I realized the freewheel fit- but the chain wouldn't (hit stays) after lacing and dishing the rear wheel. All my fault. And the sellers partly- what I didn't know about the rear Campy hub was the axle had been hacked (cut). Barely long enough for 126 spacing. More 124mm. And spaced wrong. Long story short- rather than risking spoke length problems with re-dishing after initial calculation I'm going with a 5 speed freewheel rather than the regina 6. I'm pissed but that's that. Had a silver freewheel with silver black chain. Now I'll have a gold Suntour freewheel with a silver black chain but who cares- it's the crash bike
Front derailleur cable attached. Cranks and rear derailleur.
Thanks for letting me share this dream!

Death fork? Naaaah!!
Try one of the Regina Ultra-spaced 6 cog freewheels. Pastor Bob helped me make one up for my Mirella.

I discuss the show a little bit in my BREAKING AWAY TRIBUTE PAGE. I think I call it "vapid schlock" or something like that.
You say the bike in the stolen bike episode was a "LA STRADA".

The real deal.
No, that is NOT a counterfeit Rolls Royce.

I did quickly reference what Sears was selling in the Free Spirit line in the late 70's. One of the bikes actually had lugs, ( I was assuming basic welded)
and had a cottered bottom bracket. The headtube/lug segment was one piece, but I was expecting one piece cranks.

I just watched the pilot episode, where Dave and the La Strada "meet"... it looked a bit nicer than resprayed Huffy. It was a faded out, direct from VCR tape copy... still, the bike appears to have top tube clamps for the rear brake cable (which would have been typical for a nicer tube frame), pointed seat stay caps, a fluted alloy seatpost, suede racing saddle, and three piece crankset.

It just says the bikes were "courtesy of Huffy Corporation", not that they were real authentic genuine Huffies. Why take a chance having to redo a take due to mechanical failure or spontaneous combustion? A smart director would use re-painted Murrays or Sears Free Spirits at least.

Paint Question
Can anyone (op?) post a link to the rustoleom paintbrush doityerself paint job info? Kind of interested in trying this on a tribute/repro/forgery that i am bringing back to life, in this case an old Peugeot...but, with good paint and decals, it might end up a 'xtra special' Peugeot Thanks for any assistance, trying to get the straight dope on that Rustoleum technique.

But google Rustoleum paint Job and you'll find videos, blogs etc. With this bike I only used 600 and 800 wet sanding. But it's up to you. Regards
P.S. Any color you mix will dry a touch darker than how it looks wet. So do a test and see how it looks dry.
