Tire/wheel covers?

Within the last week, a pair of these were shown on a shop bike in the Linda Ronstadt thread, someone found some in the Saved from the Dump thread, and I just found a pair in an unopened box of stuff that came along with a bike I bought last year.
Until then, I never saw a pair.
What are these things supposed to do, and do they do it? Are they still used routinely by any cycling discipline or sub-culture?

Maybe I just need to get out more and circulate with a higher/lower/different class of cyclists.....sigh

In my experience, they were used by race teams and convention marketers to advertise stuff; because you could print really big words and logos on them.

They are just like wheel bags. They help protect the wheels/tires during storage and transport especially nice to have if you have very expensive silk tubular. I would think they also help keep your vehicles clean if you have to transport the wheels between rides and races. Only difference with wheelbags was, they can be mounted and stored with the bike frame.
race teams and manufacturers also like them to put their advertisements on them, BITD.
Wheel bags pretty much replaced tire covers as they are easier and cleaner to transport and handle. Don't think they really make them anymore.
Now, I think, more of just a nice C&V conversational piece, to match up with C&V bikes.....

They can color coordinate with streamers when you're in a parade. :innocent:

Tire covers were considered pretty essential for track riders. Sub 200 gram tires don’t have much in the way of sidewalls.Tire covers do offer some protection when carry wheels and loading them for transport. Also, they do limit the amount of exposure to direct sunlight. Not a big deal some places, but worth considering in places like So.Cal and Colorado.
But it was not just track riders. Back in the days of the Campy Van( which should have its own thread ) Bill Woodall and his compatriots always covered the tires on the wheels that rode atop the van. They stayed cleaner, out of the sun, and were likely less bug splattered after on of their cross country trips. But Campy used the blue rubber Clement covers that were supposed to be some odd sized Italian tire. Never knew for sure, as the few times I got to talk to the guys in the van I had questions about more important things than their choice of tire covers.

Rules?! What rules?! I didn't know there were any rules.
I'm no rule breaker.
Here's one, the other one looks just like it. :)

Aah...more good detail.
Thank you!

I think they’re neat enough to continue looking for a second one!

They look like my body as I age.
